A portrait of women in an English village”. The book was based on memories of women in Isleham, some of which dated back to the late 19th century. Mary pioneered the use of oral history in the study of women’s history, and the Isleham Society are delighted to welcome her to talk about her research and books.\n\n\n\n\n\nThurs 17th Sept 2026 – “Fenwomen. A Portrait of Women in an English village” by Mary Chamberlain\n\n\nThe Beeches, Mill Street, Isleham.\n\n\nDoors and bar open 7pm for 7:30pm start.\n\n\nAll welcome. £3 for non-members. Pay on the door. No booking required.\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2025 the publishers Virago published a special golden anniversary edition of Fenwomen. You may wish to purchase a book to read in advance and bring with you to get it signed by the author on the night.
