County to welcome “powerful” knife monument

Cambridgeshire is set to host a 27-foot-tall monument created to raise awareness of knife crime and its devastating impact on individuals, families and communities.

The nationally recognised Knife Angel will be at Palace Green, in Ely, opposite the Ely Cathedral from 20 May to 17 June.

It will be free to attend, open seven days a week and accessible to the public throughout its stay.

The opening ceremony on 20 May will see speakers including High Sheriff Frances Burkitt, Police and Crime Commissioner Darryl Preston, Chief Constable Simon Megicks, Chief Fire Officer Matthew Warren and knife crime campaigner and spoken word artist Quinton Green.

The Knife Angel was created by sculptor Alfie Bradley at the British Ironwork Centre. It has been crafted from more than 100,000 knives and blades confiscated by police forces across the UK and serves as a powerful symbol of the human cost of knife crime and violence.

This will be the sculpture’s first visit to Cambridgeshire, which will coincide with a knife amnesty, encouraging people to safely surrender weapons and helping to prevent further harm.

Throughout the Knife Angel’s stay, there will be a strong focus on education and engagement, particularly with young people. Secondary school visits are scheduled for 2, 9 and 16 June, with workshops and programmes taking place on those days to support prevention and early intervention.

The project is being delivered by Soham Town Rangers Football Club in collaboration with partners including the Police, the Police and Crime Commissioner, Cambridgeshire County Council, East Cambridgeshire District Council and Ely Cathedral.

National Lottery funding has largely covered the costs of the Knife Angel and local businesses have also contributed, with recovery firm, Manchetts, transporting the Angel and local community group, Men’s Shed in Soham, making the picket fence which will surround it.

Police and Crime Commissioner, Darryl Preston said: “I welcome the Knife Angel to Cambridgeshire. Its message of anti-violence is clear and moving. Whilst we may not have the scale of knife crime that is seen in some parts of the country, sadly Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are not immune to these issues. Hosting the Knife Angel will illustrate to communities, in Ely and across the wider county, the devastating effect of knife crime. It’s also an opportunity to engage our communities, particularly young people, to make them more aware of the risks and consequences of knife carrying. I will continue to work with partners to support their efforts to prevent serious violence.”

Superintendent Paul Rogerson said: “Knife crime is thankfully low in Cambridgeshire in comparison with national levels. However, every single incident leaves lasting harm on individuals, families and communities and the Knife Angel is a powerful reminder of the real human cost behind every blade. By bringing the sculpture to Cambridgeshire, alongside a knife amnesty, we want to encourage people to think twice, surrender weapons safely and have honest conversations about how we prevent violence before it happens.”

The project will also support East Anglian Air Ambulance, who will be holding a range of activities throughout the Knife Angel’s stay in Ely. These will include delivering CPR and defibrillator training, as well as holding collections and opportunities for the community to learn more about the charity’s lifesaving work.

With no regular government funding, every mission is made possible by public support and working with local partners on events like this helps raise awareness of the importance of keeping this lifesaving service flying.”

The Knife Angel’s visit aims to spark conversations, educate communities about the consequences of carrying knives, and reinforce the message that violence can be prevented through collective action.

The children attended the groundbreaking ceremony at the Cathedral Rise development site, where housebuilder Bellway is delivering the properties as part of the Orchards Green neighbourhood on the outskirts of Ely.

House captains from each year group at the school, which is near the new development, were invited to the site along with Bellway staff and representatives from groundworks company MIDA.

Headteacher at the school Bryony Surtees said: “Our pupils enjoyed attending the groundbreaking ceremony at Cathedral Rise. It was a unique and memorable opportunity for them so thank you to Bellway for inviting us to be part of the occasion.

“As new homes are built and people move in, our pupils who attended the groundbreaking will be able to say they were there right at the start of construction and I’m sure they will take a keen interest in seeing how it progresses in the years ahead.

“Cathedral Rise will be an important addition to the area and we look forward to welcoming children who come to live there as pupils here at our school.”

Bellway Eastern Counties Construction Manager Jessica Garton said: “Inviting children from the Isle of Ely Primary School to attend the groundbreaking ceremony at Cathedral Rise was an inspiring way to launch construction of these sustainable new homes.

“We are keen to nurture good relationships with the surrounding community throughout the construction process and thought it would be nice for the school to be part of this ceremonial occasion. We hope the children will always remember that they were here on the very first day of work.

“I would also like to thank our staff from Bellway and representatives of groundworkers MIDA for taking part on the day and turning over the earth to mark the start of this important project.”

Bellway is building one and two-bedroom apartments and two to five-bedroom houses at Cathedral Rise, with sales launching in the coming months. There will be 180 properties for private sale and 120 affordable homes for local people through low-cost rent or shared ownership. The affordable homes will include 14 bungalows.

All the homes will be heated with low-carbon air source heat pumps and each property will have an electric vehicle charging point.

Cathedral Rise will be the fifth phase of the wider Orchards Green project which is set to provide 1,200 homes for the area.

As part of its role as a national Youth Guarantee Trailblazer, the Combined Authority is expanding its skills offer to create more opportunities than ever before. The programme focuses on two key routes into employment: increasing the number of apprenticeships and introducing fully funded internships to help young people take their first step into the world of work.

To support both young people and employers, additional funding and incentives have been introduced.

For the first time, 18–21-year-olds can access fully funded six-week internships. These placements remove the wage cost for employers, making it easier for businesses to offer short-term opportunities where young people can gain experience, build confidence, and demonstrate their potential.

To encourage more apprenticeship opportunities for 16–18-year-olds, the local support grant has been doubled to £4,000. This funding is designed to help local employers create training roles that offer a direct route into skilled employment.

The expanded programme comes at a crucial time. While Cambridgeshire and Peterborough continue to grow, too many young people are still finding it difficult to secure their first job or training opportunity.

Current figures show that 3.9% of 16–17-year-olds in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are not in education, employment, or training, rising to 5.4% in Peterborough. By increasing access to paid internships and apprenticeships, the Combined Authority aims to reduce these figures and provide clear alternatives to unemployment.

Paul Bristow, Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, said:

“I want to help more young people into good jobs. We know that getting that first foot in the door is often the hardest part, and these changes are about opening that door for as many people as possible.

“This funding will support even more apprenticeships and internships, giving our young people the chance to learn new skills, build their confidence, and move into great careers. It also gives local businesses the practical support they need to bring in new talent and grow their workforce.”

To help deliver these opportunities, the Combined Authority is offering significant financial support to local businesses. Small and medium-sized enterprises can access up to £5,000 in total cash support when hiring a young apprentice, combining local and national grants. Employers can also take on an intern at zero wage cost for six weeks.

The colourful, hand-knitted chicks have become a familiar and much-anticipated sight in the Hospice, its charity shops and at local events during the lead-up to Easter. Each chick is sold to raise vital funds that support compassionate end-of-life care for patients and families across Cambridgeshire.

The charity is now inviting knitters of all abilities to get involved by creating chicks to be sold in the run-up to Easter. A knitting pattern is available via the Hospice’s social media channels, and all handmade chicks should be clearly labelled for community fundraising.

Completed chicks can be:

The hub is located in a cabin within the car park of the Wilburton Flame pub and restaurant and is open 7am to 7pm, Monday to Friday.

Bill Hunt, district councillor for the Stretham Ward which includes Wilburton, said:

“The new hub offers residents and passing motorists a service that has been lacking in the village since Covid.
East Cambridgeshire District Council was delighted to be able to provide a £7,000 grant to help get plans off the ground, and it has been a pleasure to attend the opening ceremony and see those plans come to fruition.”

The hub officially opened its doors on Monday 12 January 2026, with representatives from organisations and groups who supported the project attending the opening.

John Attrill, a member of the community hub management committee, said:

“As a community business, all profits will be returning to the village, making this a fantastic asset to the community in more ways than one.

We have been aided by donations and grants, with wonderful support from the Plunkett Foundation, who support community businesses nationwide, a grant from the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, as well as funding from East Cambridgeshire District Council.

One of the standout highlights has been the return of The Orchards’ Wishing Tree, now in its second year. The gifting tree allows individuals to be anonymously nominated for an extra special Christmas present. Recipients may include residents, volunteers, community champions, lonely individuals without relatives, or parents who have been struggling to buy gifts for their children.

Generous donors take a tag from the tree and return with a thoughtful gift, ranging from cosy scarves and books to children’s toys. The initiative has once again proven hugely popular and has been just as successful as its inaugural year.

Festive celebrations have also embraced intergenerational connections, with children from Lantern Preschool visiting residents to take part in Christmas arts and crafts before performing their nativity. The visit created a touching bond between generations and brought smiles to residents and young performers alike.

Music has played a central role throughout the festive period. The home welcomed a range of choirs and musicians, including The Isle Singers, who performed traditional and uplifting Christmas carols. They were joined by the Cambridge University Brass Band and the City of Ely Military Band, whose lively performances filled the home with seasonal cheer.

The celebrations culminated in a lively Christmas party featuring the Band of Ukes, alongside a raffle, craft stalls and plenty of homemade mince pies, enjoyed by residents, relatives and visitors.

Erin Huggins, Assistant Activities Coordinator at The Orchards, which is run by not for profit care organisation Greensleeves Care, said:

“It’s been a busy but truly joyous run up to Christmas. The activities have captured the spirit of the season and reflected the strong sense of community we’ve fostered here at The Orchards. There’s still more to come on Boxing Day, with performances from two Ely Cathedral choristers, followed by a visit from relatives who sing together as the musical duo Gaudete, adding a very special touch to the holiday celebrations.”

These festive events form part of Greensleeves Care’s Warmth of Care winter campaign, which highlights the importance of compassion, connection and practical support for older people during the colder months.

The scheme, delivered by East Cambridgeshire District Council and funded through the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority’s Rural England Capital Growth Fund, closes for Expressions of Interest at midnight on Thursday 23 October 2025.

Funding can be used to create or safeguard jobs, bring new products to market, invest in technology, improve productivity or adopt new processes.

The programme is open to existing SME and micro businesses based within the district with a turnover under £1 million.

Applicants should have a clear business plan that shows:

• how the business will grow
• how the grant will support this growth
• where relevant, how funding will support job creation including apprenticeships
• how the business will respond to market changes
• a clear delivery plan for the project
• how the funding will benefit the wider local economy, such as the supply chain

If approved, applicants will be invited to submit a Full Application by midnight on Friday 21 November 2025, with successful businesses notified after 12 December 2025.

Grants range from £5,000 to £15,000, covering up to 60% of total eligible project costs.

Cllr Alan Sharp, Chair of the Council’s Finance and Assets Committee, said:

“We are so pleased to once again offer support to East Cambridgeshire businesses and I would encourage eligible organisations to apply before the deadline.
We are particularly keen to hear from enterprises that want to grow their offering or expand, helping to support job creation including apprenticeships and invest in new technology and innovation.
The Capital Growth Fund has already supported 22 local businesses including Fordham-based Biologic Technologies and Ely-based Raglan Projects and Cathedral St James, helping to deliver new facilities and specialist equipment to improve efficiencies and drive innovation.”

The Combined Authority has a key role in boosting apprenticeship numbers across all sectors, supporting local businesses with the skilled workers they need to grow, and helping more residents access well-paid, sustainable careers.

Businesses across the region have reported difficulties finding suitably qualified electricians, while many young people are struggling to secure apprenticeships that would allow them to enter the trade.

To help bridge this gap, the Mayor has joined forces with the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) to launch the new Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Electrotechnical Training and Careers Alliance. This innovative partnership brings together ECA members, training providers, and the Combined Authority to create new opportunities for local people to train and work in the electrical industry.

Paul Bristow said:

“We need more electricians and I’m taking action. My mission is to bring the right people together to get more people in this region into great jobs and careers. This is a fantastic example of that work in action. Electrical careers offer so much potential and this innovative alliance will open doors for more local people.”

Paul Leonard, of Cambridge-based ECA Member Munro Building Services Ltd, added:

“The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough region needs many more qualified, skilled electricians to achieve its huge economic potential. As local employers and strong supporters of high-quality training, we and other ECA members welcome the Mayor’s commitment to convene industry, education, the Combined Authority and the LSIP to address the opportunities and challenges our region faces together.”

Charlotte Horobin, CEO of Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce, said:

“The Electrotechnical Training and Careers Alliance is a fantastic example of collaboration in action. The first step for the Alliance will be to create a plan of action to build a pipeline of skilled workers. The group will also contribute to the region’s Local Skills Improvement Plan, led by the Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce, which aims to improve local training and employment pathways.

To maintain the number of electricians required, annual apprentice recruitment needs to reach at least 5% of the existing workforce each year. Currently, the average in England is below 4%. Many classroom-based routes into the trade are also failing to transition learners into employment. The new Alliance will help to tackle this broken pipeline and ensure the region’s electrical sector continues to grow.

Now in its 8^th year, the Ely Hero Awards continue to shine a spotlight on those whose compassion, dedication, and courage enrich our community. Finalists were recognised across 11 categories, each highlighting acts of generosity, resilience, and inspiration that have touched countless lives.

Guests were welcomed to the sparkling evening by Host, David Learner, who paid heartfelt tribute to the local heroes being honoured. Among the distinguished attendees was His Majesty’s Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, Mr Daniel Schumann MBE, who joined in celebrating the outstanding contributions of this year’s finalists and introduced the prestigious award for THE Ely Hero 2025.

Winner of THE Ely Hero Award was Robert Barnes who has dedicated the last 10 years of his life to raise money for charities following the death his beloved wife, Lisa. He raises money for local charities and in particular the Arthur Rank Hospice, a very special place that can touch anyone’s life at any moment.

The night was filled with warmth, gratitude, and joy. A delicious dinner was shared by all, followed by an electrifying performance from the talented 4D Dance School, whose high-energy routines brought the room to life and set the perfect tone for the celebrations.

Speaking about the evening, organiser, Luke Smith said:

“The Ely Hero Awards are about celebrating the very best of our community – people who quietly and selflessly make life better for others. Tonight, we have seen kindness and strength blossom, and we are proud to share in these moments of recognition.”

The Ely Hero Awards 2025 not only recognised the remarkable efforts of the finalists but also reminded everyone present of the power of community spirit, and the importance of celebrating those who go above and beyond to help others bloom.

This year’s chosen charity was CAMSAR – Lowland Rescue, an incredible volunteer team who search for missing and vulnerable people in our community. Thanks to a raffle and a fabulous charity auction, over £1,900 was raised to help support their life-saving work. An overwhelming supply of prizes were donated by incredible local shops and businesses.

The planned repairs are vital to address wear and stress on the original timber framework of the building, dating back to the 13th century.

The conservation project has been carefully designed to respect the house’s rich heritage, and the team will be working closely with specialist contractors experienced in historic building preservation to ensure the eventual closure is as short-term as possible. The service will still relocate to Sessions House (Ely’s Court House) and a date will be released in due course.

Please note all tours and admissions to Oliver Cromwell’s House will now resume, with winter hours starting November 1^st (11am – 4pm). The Visit Ely team will continue to offer visitor support, provide local information, and retail experiences as normal.

These works form part of an ongoing commitment to preserve and protect this nationally important site, ensuring it remains safe and accessible for future generations.

The planned repairs are vital to address wear and stress on the original timber framework of the building, dating back to the 13th century.

The conservation project has been carefully designed to respect the house’s heritage, and the team will be working closely with specialist contractors experienced in historic building preservation.

During the temporary closure, all core services provided by Oliver Cromwell’s House will continue offsite, including the Tourist Information Centre and the popular Gift Shop, which will both relocate to Sessions House, Lynn Road, Ely, which has significant relevance to Ely, with many fascinating stories to tell.

Tours and talks about the building will be available to the community and visitors together with a series of new and exciting tour experiences in partnership with other local heritage sites and cultural organisations. Collectively, these initiatives will allow visitors to continue exploring the rich and diverse history of Ely through guided walks, collaborative events, and experiences throughout the city and surrounding area

The Visit Ely team will continue to offer visitor support, provide local information, and retail experiences from this temporary base.

Connor Butler and Dr Ilona Karpanos have been named finalists in the Rising Star category at the 2025 British Chamber Awards, a key event in the UK business calendar run by the British Chambers of Commerce. The award celebrates professionals who are already making a significant impact within their Chamber and the wider business community.

Connor Butler, Engagement Manager, joined Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce in 2022 and has since played a central role in driving member engagement, financial growth and strategic influence. He has significantly grown the Chamber’s Patron Programme, increasing its value by more than 300 per cent. He also led a transformation of the Chamber’s committee structures into modern, inclusive forums that better represent the region’s diverse business community. His work delivering high-level political roundtables has brought key national figures to the region, including the Business Secretary and the Chief Secretary to the Treasury.

“Connor consistently delivers above and beyond expectations,” said Charlotte Horobin, Chief Executive of Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce. “He has made a significant and lasting impact across Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and Stamford. He is not only a rising star within the Chamber but a rising force within the wider business community.”

Beyond his role at the Chamber, Connor is a trustee of Peterborough Cathedral, a governor at a local school, and supports youth development through mentoring, work experience and college interview preparation. His broad involvement in community and civic life has contributed to a growing regional profile.

Dr Ilona Karpanos, who joined the Chamber in April 2024 as International Trade and Economic Development Manager, has already made a major contribution to the Chamber’s international agenda. Shortly after joining, she supported a Cambridgeshire business in successfully entering the Ghanaian market, creating a pathway for further trade opportunities. Her leadership in delivering large-scale international events has enabled more than 100 businesses to connect with diplomats, trade ministers and commercial experts.

“Ilona embodies the spirit of innovation, collaboration and impact,” said Charlotte Horobin. “She’s already helped businesses break into new international markets, navigate complex trade challenges, and seize global opportunities. Her support is making a real difference where it counts.”

Ilona brings a strong academic and professional background to her work. She holds a PhD in Political Science and International Business and has worked as a consultant across a range of sectors. Since joining the Chamber, she has also delivered internal training, improved support logistics for exporters and strengthened the Chamber’s capacity to assist companies in expanding overseas.

Charlotte added that the nominations reflect the strength of talent within the organisation and the region. “To see both Connor and Ilona recognised at national level is a moment of real pride for us and for the wider Cambridgeshire business community.”

Winners of the British Chamber Awards will be announced at a gala dinner in October.

The money can be used to create or safeguard jobs or bring new products to market. Businesses can also use it to invest in new technologies, processes or measures to improve productivity.

In total, £164,750 is being made available to East Cambridgeshire District Council and the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority through the UK Shared Prosperity Business Grant Fund.

The programme is open to any existing SME or micro businesses located within the district with a turnover of less than £1 million.

The fund is designed to support smaller local businesses looking to grow, with support available for both:

• Capital expenditure – such as machinery, technology or shop refurbishment
• Revenue expenditure – such as staff training and marketing

Applicant businesses should have in place a strong business plan that includes:

• Plans to grow the business
• How funding will be used to support this growth
• Where applicable, how funding will support job creation, including apprenticeships
• How the funding will support the business to respond to market changes
• A clear delivery plan for the project that funding is supporting
• How the funding will benefit the wider local economy, e.g. the supply chain

Interested businesses must submit an Expression of Interest form by Friday 1 August.

If approved, applicants will be invited to submit a Full Application by Friday 22 August 2025.

• The minimum award available is £2,000
• The maximum award is £7,500
• Grants can cover up to 60% of the total project cost (e.g. £3,000 grant for a £5,000 project)

Cllr Alan Sharp, Chair of the council’s Finance and Assets Committee, said:

“We are delighted to once again be in a position of encouraging local businesses to invest in East Cambridgeshire. We are particularly keen to hear from enterprises that want to grow or expand, helping to create new jobs and invest in technology and processes for the future.”

So far in 2025, more than 10 grants totalling over £200,000 have been paid to local businesses in East Cambridgeshire, including Biologic Technologies, Cathedral St James, and Raglan Projects, through the latest Capital Growth Fund.

Before that, she worked for the National Farmers’ Union where she spent five years as Head of External Affairs.

He is a Chartered Accountant and holds a degree in Mathematics from the University of Durham. Before joining Cambridge Commodities, Ian worked in general practice assisting a portfolio of SMEs with tax and accounting needs.

Cambridgeshire’s biggest bus operator, Stagecoach East, is proud to support Armed Forces Day 2025 by offering free bus travel to serving military, veterans, and cadets across its network during the Armed Forces Day weekend from Friday 27 to Sunday 29 June.

The initiative covers all Stagecoach East local bus services, allowing members of the Armed Forces community to travel for free to parades, ceremonies and community events around the region.

To access free travel:

– Serving military should wear uniform or show a valid military ID.

– Veterans can present a veterans’ badge or military medal.

The gesture forms part of Stagecoach’s ongoing nationwide commitment to recognising and supporting the Armed Forces. The company also provides free travel on Remembrance Day and Remembrance Sunday each year, in honour of those who have served.

Cathedral View Childcare has won three prestigious honours at the 2025 SME Cambridgeshire Business Awards, including two Golds and a Silver.

Are you looking for a new way to get outdoors and active or find something you can enjoy together with the family? If the answer is yes, Ely Sailing Club is inviting you, your family and your friends to come and try sailing for FREE on Saturday 3rd May and Friday 9th May 2025.

Whether you’re completely new to the sport or looking to get back on the water, our Open Day is the perfect time to give it a go. Therefore, we are inviting the local community to come down to have a go at sailing with us, see what Ely Sailing Club has to offer and get involved. Who knows, you might just get hooked!

Starting at 1pm, on Saturday 3rd May, you’re warmly invited to tour the lake and sample the delights of sailing by enjoying a FREE taster session out on the water in the capable hands of experienced sailors who will be more than happy to answer any questions that you may have. All buoyancy aids will be provided. A similar session will take place in the evening of Friday 9th May.

As an RYA Training Centre, should you wish to progress your interest, our training team will be on hand to provide information about our RYA approved training courses together with details of membership. You’ll be able to sign up for these courses the week after these events to allow you time to decide if you think that sailing might be for you.

Hot & cold drinks, ice creams and small snacks will be available to purchase from the galley tuck shop at both events.

Sailing at Ely can be as physical or relaxing as you wish to make it, you can sail with others or on your own, do it competitively or potter about and just enjoy the gentle escape of being outside in the fresh air.

FAQs

Do I need to book?

There is no need to book in for these events, please just turn up between 1-4pm on the Saturday and/or 6.30-8pm on Friday.

What do I need to bring?

Yourself! We provide Buoyancy aids which must be worn on or near the water. Please ensure that you wear suitable shoes (closed toe trainers are perfect.) If you wish to purchase from the tuck shop, cash & card are accepted. Also please be mindful of the weather and consider coats, sun cream and hats.

Is there a minimum age?

There is no minimum (or maximum!) age for the Open Events and we encourage families to come try out sailing but those 16 and under will require an adult to attend with them. Sailing trips can only take place if we have a suitable Buoyancy aid meaning that the very littles might not be able to go on the water (although they are welcome to attend). To take a course at Ely Sailing Club, the minimum age is 8 years old.

It is a guardians decision and responsibility as to whether a child participates in a sailing trip at Open Events; if you’re at all unsure, please speak to a volunteer on the day. Those helming the boats also reserve the right to decline to take anyone on a sailing taster if they believe it would be unsafe or inappropriate.

Is there parking?

The club has a small area of grassed parking that those attending the open day are able to use at their own risk. Please park considerately. Bikes can be locked to fencing if two wheels is your preferred form of transport.

Will I get wet?

It’s very unlikely unless it’s raining! Your feet may get damp from splashes in the boat.

The Impact Review outlines how The Cambridge made a difference in its community during a record-breaking year of donations and volunteering by staff, and the expansion of schemes designed to help people get on to the housing ladder. 

Highlights from 2024 included: 

• A total of £117,401 donated to local good causes, including £59,127 to six local charities through our Community Fund. 
• Launched community partnerships with Emmaus, Jimmy’s and The Angel’s Foundation to enable these charities to help people with homes and shelter. 
• More than 2,000 people will have been supported by the charities and organisations that received funds and grants from The Cambridge. 
• 131 of our team members volunteered more than 1,000 hours of their time to support local charities and community projects. 
• We appointed one of our members, Jodie, to our Community Fund Panel. 
• We added three properties to our innovative Rent to Home scheme which supports first-time buyers – with two new tenants moving into our Ely property. 

Carole Charter, Chief Commercial Officer at The Cambridge, said: 

“Reflecting on the different ways we’ve been making a difference always brings me tremendous pride and 2024 was a special year for the Society. We expanded and strengthened many of our initiatives, enabling us to further support our community. 

“We want to make a long-lasting impact in our community as we celebrate our 175th anniversary this year, and so we have pledged to donate £175,000 to good causes and added two new Rent to Home properties, with more announcements still to come.” 

The Cambridge is now accepting applications through its Community Fund for grants of up to £20,000 for charities that support people with housing and shelter. 

Charities within a 15-mile radius of one of The Cambridge’s branches have until 1 May to apply for a grant of between £2,500 and £10,000 to support vital projects and services that support people with homes and housing needs.

The Combined Authority’s Market Towns Programme is investing back into high streets, community buildings and outside spaces to support a sustainable future for these historic towns.

The latest funding commitments include £927,500 for the Littleport Business and Community Centre, which will create a multi-use facility to support local businesses, remote workers, and community groups.

The centre will serve as a hub for meetings, training sessions, workshops, and events, while also hosting outreach services for healthcare, wellbeing, education, and employment support.

The Combined Authority has worked with Littleport Town Council and East Cambridgeshire District Council on the project, with further funding secured for all of the £2.2 million cost. It is planned to open in October/November 2026.

Littleport Town Council Chairman Clive Webber, said: “This is a significant development for the residents of Littleport. The Council is delighted to have secured this funding to provide a community hub which aims to support local businesses, health services and host further educational providers, creating a centralised space which will enhance local services and resources for the residents of Littleport.

Ely Baby Bank was able to celebrate after receiving a cheque for £1,500, which will provide baby formula and food to Ely families in need.

The funding came from Tesco’s Stronger Starts scheme, in partnership with the Groundwork charity, which supports many Ely community projects and good causes, giving away thousands of pounds.

Cilla Palmer, founder at Ely Baby Bank, said: “The demand for formula milk and baby food is rising, and we now support 100 families a week. In just three months, formula requests doubled from 30 to 62 tubs, even with a one-per-month limit.

“Thanks to Tesco’s generous £1,500 donation, we can address this growing need by stocking essential baby food and improving our storage. This support will ease financial pressure on parents, reduce food insecurity, and create a welcoming space for families.”

Ely shoppers can use the Stronger Starts scheme to support local groups by dropping the Tesco community token they receive at checkout into the relevant voting box as they leave the store.

Claire De Silva, Head of Community at Tesco, applauded both organisations essential work for its community. She added: “We’re delighted that we can help Ely Baby Bank to continue its vital service in the Ely community. Stronger Starts invites our customers to use their blue tokens to vote for local schemes they feel will benefit children and young people, and it’s so good to see the impact that the funding makes.”

What is Padel?

Padel is the world’s fastest-growing racket sport—a fun, social mix of tennis and squash played on an enclosed court about a third of the size of a tennis court. It’s easy to learn, highly sociable, and suitable for all ages and abilities.

Currently, there are around 90,000 padel players in the UK, but the LTA expects this to grow to 600,000 by 2026. Despite this rapid growth, the nearest padel courts to Ely are in Cambridge, Bury St Edmunds, or St Ives. EOSA wants to change that and bring padel to Ely.

Why Support EOSA?

EOSA is a not-for-profit, volunteer-led organisation based behind Ely Leisure Village. It provides sports and social facilities for Ely Tigers Rugby Club, Ely City Hockey Club, Ely Tennis Club, and the wider community.

EOSA’s day-to-day running costs are covered by club memberships and facility hire, but extra funding is needed to build the padel courts.

Alongside Crowdfunding, EOSA is applying for grants, with the goal of completing the courts this summer. Once built, the courts will be available through padel membership or pay-to-play options, making them affordable and accessible for everyone.

Exciting Progress: Reopening Early in the New Year

We’re delighted to share the next steps in saving the cinema:

• Babylon Arts is transferring management of The Maltings Cinema to the Dawe Charitable Trust (DCT) under the new name Ely Community Cinema.
• The City of Ely Council has agreed to transfer the venue to the DCT.
• With full cooperation from Babylon Arts, we aim to reopen the cinema early in the New Year.

Volunteers: The Heart of Ely Community Cinema

We couldn’t do this without you—our amazing volunteers!  To ensure smooth operations, we’ve organised volunteer teams into five groups:

2. Screening Technical
3. Marketing & Ticketing

The money can be used to create or safeguard jobs or bring new products to market. Businesses can also use it to invest in new technologies, processes or measures to improve productivity.

In total £550,000 is being made available to East Cambridgeshire District Council and the Cambridge & Peterborough Combined Authority through the Rural England Prosperity Fund.

The programme is open to any existing SME or micro businesses located within the district.

Applicant businesses should have in place a strong business plan that:

• demonstrates plans to grow the business

• how funding will be used to support this growth

• where applicable how funding will support job creation including apprenticeships

• how the funding will support the business to respond to market changes

• a clear delivery plan for the project that funding is supporting

• how the funding will be of benefit to the wider local economy, for example, the supply chain.

Interested businesses can submit an Expression of Interest form from Monday 25 November until midnight on Friday 3 January 2025.

If approved, applicants will be invited to submit a Full Application by midnight on 14 February 2025. Successful applicants will be notified after 28 February 2025.

The minimum award available to any successful applicant is £10,000 and the maximum award is £50,000. Access to grant funding for those businesses who are approved will be up to a maximum of 50% of the total project cost.

Cllr Alan Sharp, Chair of the council’s Finance and Assets Committee, which approved the funding, said: “We are delighted to once again be in a position of encouraging local businesses to invest in East Cambridgeshire. We are particularly keen to hear from enterprises that want to grow or expand, helping to create new jobs and invest in technology and processes for the future.

“Our last funding pot exceeded £310,511 and supported the growth of 20 businesses including Silver Oak Coffee, The Beauty Loft Ely and Julia’s Tea Rooms, helping to deliver projects to the value of £1.5 million.”

As part of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority’s ongoing mission to create a strong, sustainable economy and encourage high-growth businesses to flourish in the region, Dr Nik Johnson, Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough has today visited CMR Surgical, a worldwide surgical robotics business based in Ely.

Versius has been rolled out in NHS hospitals across the UK, delivering major benefits to both patients and hospitals as more operations as performed as keyhole surgeries across specialities including colorectal surgery, urology, gynaecology, and thoracic surgery.  Keyhole surgery is less invasive, and patients recover quicker and better, requiring shorter hospital stays.

The Combined Authority’s proactive approach to business engagement and investment has already seen substantial results.

Three years ago, the Combined Authority played a key role in supporting CMR Surgical’s decision to establish its global manufacturing facility in Ely, providing the infrastructure and incentives needed to attract this world-leading company to the region. This move is part of a broader strategy to position Cambridgeshire and Peterborough as a hub for high-tech innovation and advanced manufacturing.

The presence of CMR Surgical has created dozens of highly skilled jobs across production, engineering, and operations, positioning Ely as a critical site for global surgical robotics manufacturing. During the recent preview weekend, a group of lucky dog owners brought their dogs along to try out the facilities. Jay Chapman from Chatteris and his puppy Rocky were among the first to visit. Jay said “Rocky has had a brilliant time at the field today. He’s a young puppy and we are still training him to be off lead in public so this is the perfect opportunity for him to run free, safely and away from any other dogs. The children have also really enjoyed encouraging him to try out the equipment, so everyone has had plenty of fresh air and exercise!”

Shop Watch is a scheme similar to Neighbourhood Watch. Running via WhatsApp it allows businesses to effectively communicate with each other to help tackle shoplifting and anti-social behaviour.

It is being organised by East Cambridgeshire Community Safety Partnership (CSP) which brings together representatives from the police, Federation of Small Businesses and East Cambridgeshire District Council, as well as other organisations working together to protect the local community from crime and help people feel safe.

To date 87 businesses in Ely, 18 in Littleport and 7 in Soham have signed up, and all businesses at Ben’s Yard, near Stuntney have received information packs and set up their own WhatsApp chat group.

Members of the East Cambs Community Safety partnership are now looking to expand numbers and will be in contact with businesses in Fordham and Isleham over the next couple of weeks.

Lis Every, Chair of the East Cambs CSP, said: “We’ve been delighted with the phenomenal support we have received from East Cambridgeshire businesses for the scheme. It goes without saving the more retail organisations that sign up, the more effective the scheme is at preventing shoplifters, burglaries and anti-social behaviour.”

Cambridgeshire Police’s Crime and Priorities data for the last year shows there was 290 shoplifting offences in East Cambridgeshire between 1st February 2023 and 31st January 2024.

The number of young people enrolled on apprenticeships in East Cambridgeshire is one of the highest levels across the county, with 11.4% of 18-year-olds enrolled.

But currently, the majority of these posts are outside of the area in Cambridge, meaning the district’s businesses risk losing talent.

To help combat this, East Cambridgeshire District Council is doing all it can to raise awareness around apprenticeships.

In April it will be launching a new grant scheme aimed at businesses interested in expanding their workforce and investing in innovation. It is hoped this will also be an opportunity to support job creation through apprenticeships.

The council is also working closely with West Suffolk College with a view to the college becoming a key delivery partner for apprenticeships in the district.

The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority has also commissioned a feasibility study into the provision of adult education.

Cllr Alan Sharp, who chairs the council’s Finance and Assets Committee, said: “Apprenticeships are a win-win situation for everyone involved.

“Young people get to benefit from on-the-job training where they can obtain industry-wide qualifications at the same time they are gaining valuable work experience and getting paid.

“Employers who hire an apprentice often find it’s a productive and effective way to grow talent and develop a motivated, skilled and qualified workforce.

“Typically, 78% of employers said apprenticeships helped them improve productivity and 74% say apprentices have helped them improve the quality of their product or service.”

The council itself currently employs 3 apprentices across its finance, customer services and parks and open spaces departments.

Jarred Parisi joined the council on a four-year apprenticeship surveyor degree programme in 2019, graduating last year.

He said: “No two days are the same in building control and you are always helping people, which is probably my favourite part of the job. You also see a variety of different buildings and the way they are constructed and I particularly like that I’m not stuck behind a desk all the time – it’s great being out on site and meeting people.”

Jarred’s commitment to the role won him the LABC’s Newcomer of the Year award in 2022.

Jess Clark is in her second year of an apprenticeship in the finance department and finds learning the different roles and aspects rewarding.

Jess explains: “In my role I am able to experience all aspects of finance, working with the team who are experienced and knowledgeable in their roles. I knew an apprenticeship was the best way for me to train, I can apply what I am learning in a practical way on the job and continue my development at the same time.”

So far Jess has completed AAT level 2 in bookkeeping and is one exam away from completing her AAT level 3 diploma in accounting.

Jess adds: “I enjoy the responsibility of working on my own initiative; knowing I have the ongoing guidance and support from line managers and colleagues really helps. I have found the combination of day release for college and on the job training a rewarding experience and the time has just flown by.”

East Cambridgeshire District Council is committed to supporting businesses in their journey to success. Its last funding pot exceeded £600,000 and supported the growth of 30 local businesses. Grants of up to £30,000 helped companies such as BiologIC, B&T Motors, Ely Tyres and Demcom scale up their operations. This in turn helped to create over 80 new jobs and 20 apprenticeships.

Steve from Steve’s Shack shop in Ely, said: “I would recommend all shops consider joining Shop Watch. By working together and notifying others it is easy to crack down on shoplifters and reduce theft, particularly as we are now approaching the busy festive season. Simply by being more aware and prepared can also help to protect staff, especially if someone is displaying abusive or threatening behaviour.”

The Shop Watch launch is being organised by East Cambridgeshire Community Safey Partnership (CSP) which brings together representatives from the police, Federation of Small Businesses and East Cambridgeshire District Council, as well as other organisations working together to protect the local community from crime and help people feel safe.

Lis Every, chair of the CSP, said: “We want to extend a warm welcome to all businesses that would like to find out more about the Shop Watch scheme. Representative from the CSP, the East Cambs Neighbourhood Policing Team and the Federation of Small Businesses will be at the launch on Tuesday, 5th December at East Cambridgeshire District Council.

“They’ll be able to find out more about the scheme over a cup of tea or coffee, sign up to the What’sApp and collect a free Shop Watch pack. This contains a poster, window sticker and a Safer Business, Safer Streets pack, which has kindly funded by the Police and Crime Commissioners.”

Darryl Preston, Police and Crime Commissioner, said: “I am pleased to be able to fund this initiative – tackling crime and anti-social behaviour is a key priority in my Police and Crime Plan.

“Shop Watch is a fantastic way to bring local businesses together to share information which will help protect local communities from crime.  I would urge all #East Cambs businesses to sign up to the scheme to help the police tackle those responsible.”

The council has approved £550,000 towards the cost of improving and expanding the E-Space North Business Centre into a dynamic hub to support the formation and growth of new and existing businesses.  

The proposed 580sqm facility is essential to address the shortfall in employment opportunities and reduce the number of people commuting out of the town to work.

Operating as a business growth zone, the rejuvenated hub will provide additional much needed commercial work space and over a five year period is expected to generate up to 200 jobs.

The Finance and Assets Committee unanimously agreed to allocate the council’s Rural England Prosperity Funding to the project on Monday evening (3rd July 2023).

It will be added to £925,000 already allocated to the project following a successful bid to the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority’s market town programme.

Earlier this year the Council invested £50,000 to add solar panels to the roof of E-Space North helping save up to 20 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.

Councillor Alan Sharp, who chairs the committee, said: “Littleport is a town with huge potential and this investment to reinvigorate our already successful business growth hub, E-Space-North will help towards unlocking that for the benefit of local residents and businesses.

“On a practical level, this development will generate up to 200 new jobs, and inject much needed investment into the town’s economy.  

“But perhaps more importantly it will inspire much-needed confidence in the town and provide the key to further funding streams, which in turn will enable Littleport to deliver its vision for 2030 for the huge benefit of everyone who lives there.”

The cost-of-living crisis and the cost-of-doing business crisis are two sides of the same coin. The Bank of England’s projections of a recession and consumer confidence reported by GfK at a 50-year low are clear signs that the Government is running out of time to offer businesses and households the support they need.  

These projections are not a surprise to the BCC or the business community. Over the last 18 months, BCC research has shown unprecedented inflationary pressures on businesses, with two thirds of firms in Q2 2022 expecting further price rises. Energy bills, raw materials, and labour costs are all cited as the top drivers of price rises.  

Worryingly, BCC research is also showing a reduction in the percentage of firms expecting to grow in the next 12 months, from 63 per cent in Q1 to 54 per cent in Q2. In January, BCC found that 23 per cent of businesses surveyed were looking to scale down or even consider closure in response to rising costs.  

Firms cannot afford to wait another month without practical support measures being put in place. Now is the time for action. 

Addressing the challenges facing businesses and households, Director General of the BCC, Shevaun Haviland, said: “Today I have written to the Prime Minister, Chancellor of the Exchequer and both Conservative Party leadership candidates expressing my concern for businesses and households during these challenging times.  

“Since the start of 2021 we have been repeatedly hearing the same message: the cost-of-doing-business is increasing.   

“At over 10 per cent, CPI inflation is at a 40-year high; interest rates are seeing the largest increase in 27 years; and eye watering energy bills have created a perfect storm of increasing costs. The impact of these challenges on consumers, businesses and wider society cannot be overstated.  

“Consumer confidence reported at a 50-year low, and the Bank of England’s projections of a year-long recession, demonstrates that the cost-of-living crisis and the cost-of-doing-business crisis are two sides of the same coin. 

“The BCC’s five-point plan is not solely about ensuring support for businesses. It is also about protecting jobs, securing livelihoods, and creating a vibrant and prosperous society for everyone.  

“Good business is good for our communities, and we must support firms and the individuals that run them to ride out this economic storm.   

“In June, we gave the Government until the Autumn budget to get its house in order, but the latest economic projections released since then have been worse than expected. We simply cannot afford to see another month of the same old news.  

“Through feedback from accredited Chambers of Commerce around the UK, alongside our extensive research and survey work, we know what businesses require now to survive and plan for growth. The regulation of the energy sector for businesses must be strengthened. Businesses also need to receive support for spiralling costs through grant funding and a reduction in VAT on energy bills, along with measures to boost growth such as a temporary reversal of NICs and an urgent reform of the SOL to fill staff vacancies. 

“The problems are well understood. We at the BCC are offering solutions. It is now over to the Government to take action to protect businesses, livelihoods and jobs.”

East Cambridgeshire District Council believes more than 500 businesses across the district have yet to apply for the COVID-19 Additional Relief Fund (CARF) scheme.

To help provide support, it is opening a new funding window which runs until 19th August.

Funding worth £1.6 million was provided by the Government to the Council in 2021 to support businesses outside of the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors that were impacted by the pandemic.

In an effort to provide additional support, the Council is offering to double the amount of discount the Government estimates each business sector suffered as a result of the downturn in trade.

The relief will be applied as a credit to business rates for 2021/22.

All eligible businesses in East Cambridgeshire have been written to and can check their eligibility and apply for the CARF funding here http://angliarevenues.gov.uk/eccarf

East Cambridgeshire District Council has already handed out thousands of pounds worth of funding to companies struggling to survive following Covid and during the various lockdowns.

Cllr David Brown, chair of the Finance and Assets Committee, said: “As a Council we have done everything in our power to support businesses through an incredibly difficult time and this grant scheme is another avenue of help available.

“I would encourage all East Cambs businesses in the eligible sectors to make use of this vital funding by checking the criteria and applying.”

Eligible businesses that have applied for other grants should also check they have not exceeded the subsidy allowances for the COVID-19 Business Grants Scheme.

The closing date for applications is 5pm on Friday 19th August 2022 or earlier if all funding is awarded before this date.

Ely Breakfast Networking for Business are delighted to share some news!

Network Central, the new home of 4Networking, the national business networking organisation, has won the National Champions in Crisis 2022 Award at Canary Wharf’s East Wintergardens on Wednesday 23rd March.

The group was founded by motivational speaker and entrepreneur Brad Burton back in 2006, and now has a fortnightly Breakfast meeting in Ely.

4Networking’s turnover went from £2m to £0 overnight as its 5,000 nationwide meetings each year including 3 in the local area, were immediately cancelled as a result of restrictions and lockdown. Moving fast, meetings were moved online, the first business networking organisation to do so, and a new platform, Network Central, was created, both for business appointments and community support.

Network Central was nominated against brands such as Insignia and Mercedes’ AMG and DPD UK, and was presented with first place by BBC News at Ten presenter Huw Edwards. Ironically, Founder Brad Burton was unable to attend after testing positive for Covid the day before, but Directors Terry Cooper and Jen Hinds accepted the prize.

Ruth Buckley, Group Leader for the Ely Meeting says “Network Central was more crucial than ever for businesses in Ely as the pandemic struck as being able to network online and receive business and moral support was the only way to survive it for many. We’re so pleased that it has come out of the other side and now we’re able to meet face to face again.  We meet fortnightly at The High Flyer. Well done to all involved for winning this award.”

4Networking was started in 2006 by entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker Brad Burton to provide friendly, informal networking for business people around the country. This was the first launch event of the week with Wisbech, Huntingdon and Peterborough coming online in the following days. The Ely launch, which was well attended by key local stakeholders, partners, and entrepreneurs, was declared open by Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Dr Nik Johnson. 

The event offered an opportunity for local businesses to find out what support was being made available locally through partners such as Venner Shipley, Growth Works, NatWest, Price Bailey, Fraser Dawbarns, Cambridgeshire Skills, Ely Cathedral Business Group, FSB and Bishop Laney Sixth Form.

The BIPC launch also marked the collaboration going forward for a business and community centre based in the library. This new initiative has brought together stakeholders from the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority Skills Service, the Adult Skills Service, East Cambridgeshire District Council, business organisations, including the Chambers of Commerce, Ely Cathedral Business Group (ECBG) and Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), local schools and local recruitment companies. This will be the ‘one stop’ hub for all things business, education, training, and qualifications. Please watch this space for the programme of events soon to be announced.

The Business & IP Centre Cambridgeshire & Peterborough has been supporting businesses since 2019. In that time, they’ve had over 1300 interactions with local entrepreneurs through a rich variety of webinars, workshops and one-to-one business and intellectual property advice sessions. The Network has a strong track record of supporting local economies, and in 2019 an independent economic evaluation showed the BIPC was creating £6.95 of public value for every £1 invested, and in the three years to 2019 supported the creation of 12,288 new businesses, 55 per cent of which were started by female entrepreneurs and some 31 per cent by BAME entrepreneurs.

The Omicron Hospitality and Leisure Grant Scheme (OHLGS), has been made available by Central Government in recognition that the rise of the Omicron variant means some businesses may have been struggling financially.

Pubs, cafes, hotels, B&Bs and village halls are among the list of businesses that could be eligible for the scheme which is being administered on behalf of the Government by East Cambridgeshire District Council.

Specifically, the OHLGS aims to support businesses that offer in-person (face-to-face) services, when the main service and activity takes place in a fixed rate-paying premises, in the hospitality, leisure and accommodation sectors.

Grants will be paid per premises and the amounts paid will be based on the rateable value of premises on 30 December 2021, as follows:

· Rateable value of £0-£15,000 – £2667 grant

· Rateable value of £15,001- £51,000 – £4000 grant

· Rateable value of £51,001 + – £6000 grant

Councillor David Brown, Chairman of the Finance and Assets Committee, said: “I would encourage all eligible businesses operating in the hospitality, leisure and accommodation sectors to apply for the grant before the 18 March deadline.

“The package is designed to provide an emergency cash injection for those businesses which have seen their trade plummet largely because of the Omicron variant.

“As a Council we have done everything in our power to support businesses through an incredibly difficult time and this grant scheme is another avenue of help available for some of those sectors that are among the hardest hit.”

For the purposes of this scheme:

· Hospitality businesses are defined as those whose main function is to provide a venue for the consumption and sale of food and drink

· Leisure businesses are defined as those that provide opportunities, experiences and facilities, in particular for culture, recreation, entertainment, celebratory events and days and nights out

· Accommodation businesses are those whose main lodging provision is used for holiday, travel or other purposes

The OHLGS is only available for hospitality, leisure and accommodation businesses on the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) ratings list.

International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. Opening the event will be keynote speaker Julie Spence OBE QPM, Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire.

In April 2017, Julie Spence was appointed by Her Majesty The Queen as the 37th Lord-Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, the Sovereign’s representative in the County and a post that she will hold until 2030.

The event will allow delegates to delve into issues that are central to career development of women, debate ways to influence change, and take time to consider their own ambitions, aspirations and barriers. 

Commenting on her involvement, Julie Spence OBE QPM, Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, said: “I am delighted to be the speaker at the Chamber of Commerce International Women’s Day event. I will share my journey through teaching and progression through the Police force before being appointed by Her Majesty The Queen as the 37th Lord-Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, the Sovereign’s representative in the County.”

As part of the session, table workshops will allow delegates to discuss the journey of barriers we face in life and how to break the barriers at each stage.

BIPC Jumpstart offers grants, resources and support designed to help start-up businesses get set  and grow. £30k of grants is set to be awarded as a key benefit of the BIPC Jumpstart programme;  as well as further prizes and business support packages.  

The especially selected judges have been invited to participate in the programme in light of their  exceptional business links across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Judges will either shortlist  and mentor the programme applicants, or choose the BIPC Jumpstart winners during the pitching  event set to take place in February 2022. The confirmed judges are:

Pitch judges will judge the applicants on the  merit of their pitch alone, before choosing our final 2022 BIPC Jumpstart grant recipients.

BIPC Jumpstart is a unique initiative offering grants, resources and support designed to help start-up businesses get set and grow. In the knowledge that funding is often crucial to early onset businesses, £30k of grants will be awarded at the beginning of 2022 as a key benefit of the BIPC Jumpstart programme. 

The programme is open to start-up businesses that registered in Cambridgeshire or Peterborough on or after 14th January 2021, or those that will be registered and trading in Cambridgeshire or Peterborough within two months of receiving the BIPC Jumpstart grant in February 2022.

To be eligible, business owners need to fully engage in at least three BIPC business support tools, before submitting a business plan and BIPC Jumpstart application form. Applicants will be asked to highlight how a grant allocation (of up to maximum of £5,000) would make a difference to their business. 

Applications are open from Thursday 11th November until Friday 14th January 2022.

The grants on offer are set to be popular but are just one part of the BIPC Jumpstart programme. Participants will also have access to further prizes and support packages to help them on their new business journey throughout 2022; with more details, including the judging panel and delivery partners, set to be announced soon.

Once all grant applications have been received, judges will invite a shortlist of applicants to present at a series of pitching events at Cambridge Central Library in February 2022, before the overall 2022 BIPC Jumpstart grant recipients are announced.

Staff members Courtney Pettifor, Ollie Rutherford and Sam Loveday, from Elyte Fitness, will start the challenge on Thursday 11^th November at 18:00 and aim to complete all the miles by Friday 12^th November at 18:00.

The team will be splitting the first 1000 miles between them, meaning they will each be aiming to cover 333 miles in 24 hours. If the fundraising total goes above the target, members at Elyte Fitness will help by getting them over the final few hurdles!

Elyte Fitness, based at Unit 14 in Lancaster Way Business Park, will be hosting a range of fundraising activities in their fundraising efforts, ranging from a live DJ set on the Thursday evening, to Fancy Dress on the Friday, with all proceeds going to Children in Need.

Dawn Lamb, owner of Elyte Fitness and recently nominated finalist in the SME Ely Business Awards 2021 Business Hero category, organised the event along with her team, who wish to raise £1000 for Children In Need.

Dawn said: “We are always looking at ways that we can give back to the community. Children in Need is a fantastic way of bringing the community together after such a challenging 18 months.”

The 29-year-old sales consultant from Cambridge will be competing in the 13.1-mile race on Sunday 17th October in memory of his late grandmother Marina.

Damien is aiming to raise £500 for the charity, which supports end-of-life care for more than 4,100 people in Cambridgeshire every year who are living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition.

He has so far raised £222, thanks to donations from friends, family members and colleagues at Peterborough-based Vistry East Midlands, part of Vistry Group which comprises Linden Homes, Bovis Homes and Vistry Partnerships.

Damien, who is currently based at Linden Homes’ Laithwaite Gardens development in Sutton, said: “This hospice is close to my heart as my late grandma received care from them towards the end of her life. I was inspired to run this half marathon in memory of her and to raise funds for such a crucial local charity which relies on donations to continue providing the services they do.

“The work the staff do at the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity is admirable and, as I’ve seen what they can do for people first-hand, picking this charity was an easy decision to make and I am honoured to be raising awareness of its cause.

“I also wanted to set myself the personal challenge of running a half marathon, as I’ve never run this distance before despite being a sporty person. Some of my friends are also taking part, so I’m looking forward to us taking on the challenge together.

“I’m grateful to my colleagues at Vistry East Midlands who have fully backed my efforts and have been so supportive with their donations to my fundraising total, and I’m hoping more people will also be prepared to do so.”

The TTP Cambridge Half Marathon, which is usually held in the spring, will be marking its 10th Anniversary when it takes to the streets of the city in October.

In celebration of this milestone, organisers have teamed up with Muscular Dystrophy UK to hold The Cambridge Festival of Running the day before (Saturday 16th October), in which the Town and Gown 10k and junior 3k races will be taking place.

The Coronavirus Restart Grant is available for businesses with a business rates account in the non-essential retail, hospitality, accommodation, leisure, personal care, or gym sectors.

The scheme was launched to provide a one-off grant to help businesses open safely as COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.

For businesses that have already received COVID-19 Business Support Grants such as Tier 4, National Lockdown 5th January – 15th February 2021 and Closed Business Lockdown Payment Grants, the Council will need to confirm they are still eligible before processing any payments.

Councillor David Brown, Chairman of the Finance and Assets Committee, said: “As a Council, we know that businesses have felt, and continue to feel, the brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic and we will continue to do everything we can to support them during these difficult times.

“There is a fantastic range of businesses across East Cambridgeshire and we hope this funding will go some way to provide them with the support they need.

“I would encourage all businesses to check if they are eligible and apply via the Council’s website ahead of the deadline at the end of the month.”

Non-essential retail premises with a rateable value of £15,000 or under on 1st April 2021 will receive a payment of £2,667.

Non-essential retail businesses with a rateable value of over £15,000 and under £51,000 on 1st April 2021 will receive a payment of £4,000. 

Non-essential retail premises with a rateable value of £51,000 or over on 1st April will receive a payment of £6,000.

Hospitality, accommodation, leisure, personal care, and gym businesses with a rateable value of £15,000 or under on 1st April will receive £8,000.

Those with a rateable value over £15,000 and under £51,000 on 1st April will get a payment of £12,000.

Hospitality, accommodation, leisure, personal care, and gym businesses with a rateable value of £51,000 or more on 1st April will receive a grant of £18,000.

Mark, who was diagnosed with incurable cancer earlier this year, founded the Spotted in Ely community Facebook page in 2013 and has grown its online audience to more than 28,000 people.

He’s since helped to establish the Good Vibes Local Community Interest Company, a new umbrella organisation for Spotted in Ely, which launched Spotted in Ely Radio in December last year.

The trustees of the CIC hope to continue and build on the momentum of Mark’s work with the help of local businesses, such as Vistry East Midlands, which is now a sponsor of Spotted in Ely Radio and is contributing £300 towards buying new radio equipment and helping to cover the running costs of the station.

Vistry East Midlands is part of the Vistry Group – which includes Bovis Homes, Linden Homes and Vistry Partnerships – and is building new homes in Sutton and Witchford, near Ely.

This is great news for Ely and Cambridgeshire Companies, as this new service provides a “True Closed Loop” recycling service for compostable packaging from restaurants and workplaces to help companies reduce landfill.

Envar Composting and Countrystyle Recycling Ltd have partnered with Vegware to launch collections for compostable food service disposables in Cambridgeshire. This follows the recent announcement of Countrystyle Recycling’s expansion into the Cambridgeshire area, through operations at its Thetford depot and from the St Ives composting facility of its sister company, Envar Composting.

Countrystyle’s new trade waste collection service and Envar’s composting capabilities together bring sustainable solution waste management to catered offices, college restaurants and schools. All used Vegware containers, cups and cutlery (made from plants using renewable, lower carbon, recycled or reclaimed materials) can now go in the Countrystyle food waste bin. Within a maximum of 10 weeks of collection, Envar Composting’ processes will transform these materials into high quality compost for application to local horticulture and farmland.

Collections will be made using one of Countrystyle’s dedicated dual pod vehicles, which has the added benefit of reducing the carbon footprint of collections and limiting waste miles to Envar Composting’s treatment facility at St Ives.

Vegware’s Senior Waste Management Consultant, Eilidh Brunton, commented that: “Foodservice wants hygiene and sustainability. Vegware disposables are ideal for socially distanced catering, but also meet the desire of diners for an environmentally sustainable solution to disposable waste. Vegware holds the deepest set of compostability certifications in the sector, and now our clients in Cambridge can compost their used Vegware products. Work started today (Tuesday 23rd March) on hugely extending digital connectivity in both Ely and Soham – in each case, using ecclesiastical landmarks to carry the hardware and push the network out to reach even more traders, public spaces, and homes.

Funded by the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority, this new phase of street works in Ely market square – plus an upgrade of equipment high up on Ely Cathedral roof – will boost speeds and reliability and massively increase coverage, completing by July 2021. 

Busy areas with lots of footfall are priorities, and it is expected that by the end of May, three-quarters of the hardware will be installed, quickly followed by testing and final commissioning to get the network operating by summer.

Current coverage is a trial area around Market Square, Market Street, High Street, Fore Hill – but this is now expanding to take in high activity areas like the Station, Back Hill, Broad Street, Riverside, Jubilee Gardens, Waterside, and various other parts of the City Centre. 

In November 2020 the Combined Authority, led by Mayor James Palmer, approved the £195,000 capital grant for accelerated digital connectivity in Ely and a further £95,000 for Soham. 

Today, Mayor Palmer visited the Air Broadband site team at work near the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough HQ in Ely. 

James Palmer, Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, “Connectivity and coverage are the name of the game and it’s a priority to end notspots, end iffy Wifi, and get the whole of Cambridgeshire linked in with highspeed broadband that works for everyone.”  “A thousand years on, I love the fact that our eleventh century cathedral is still at the hub, helping our 21^st century Ely to reinvent itself for the future.

“Ely Free Wifi is a collaborative effort to address the needs of residents, market traders, shoppers, and tourists visiting the city. Covid-19 has shown us all that delivering top-notch click-and-connect digital has become even more important.

“More people now work or do lessons at home, or shop from home, more local businesses have seen the value of operating online. Digital infrastructure is a necessity, as essential to modern life as electricity or drains, and a must for the local economy. 

As the project rolls out, Ely Free Wifi will go way beyond the city and merge with the world-class network that CambWifi is evolving into.”    

Soham’s brand new station – currently under construction for delivery later this year – will be included in this phase of extension.  Soham church will also be used to carry hardware for the network which is to extend from the High Street out to Clay Street; Fountain Road, Station Road and all the way to the new railway station.

In January, the Combined Authority’s delivery partner East Cambridgeshire District appointed the local firm Air Broadband to extend the Wifi network programmes for both Ely and Soham.  Preliminary work for the comprehensive mesh network started immediately with planning, coverage mapping at street level, and procurement sourcing across the two towns to identify detailed requirements, contractors and equipment. 

When the click-and-connect networks are completed, the identifier “Ely and Soham Free Wifi”  will cease and users will switch to “CambWifi”, benefiting from a one-time log in for the wider Cambridgeshire network, including other towns, villages and public spaces.

Councillor Anna Bailey, Leader of East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “Providing free public Wi-Fi within some of the highest footfall areas in Ely back in 2018, was a fantastic first milestone to open up the possibilities of connectivity for the district. 

“With thanks to the Combined Authority, I am pleased to see the city take that vital next step to not only upgrade its current infrastructure, but extend this service and coverage to many more areas within the city and provide a much greater reach.

“From the train station across to the riverside and past Ely Cathedral up to the tourist information centre. This second phase is ambitious and exactly what we need for the area. 

“The pandemic has opened up our eyes to the need for digital inclusivity and this is one of the projects which we as a council are backing to act on this. 

“I look forward to when the work is completed and when residents can start to benefit from this service.”

The Government has just announced that Cambridgeshire and Peterborough will be among the first areas to benefit from Project Gigabit, the government’s new £5 billion scheme to bring the fastest broadband on earth to hard-to-reach areas.

Up to 140,000 homes and businesses in the county will have new gigabit broadband built to them.

During the checks, advice and guidance will be provided to manage risk and protect workers, customers and visitors. Where some businesses are not managing this, immediate action will be taken. This can range from the provision of specific advice, issuing enforcement notices, stopping certain work practices until they are made safe and, where businesses fail to comply, this could lead to prosecution.

Being COVID-secure means that businesses need to put adjustments in place to manage the risk and protect workers and others from coronavirus.

Councillor David Ambrose Smith, chairman of the Operational Services Committee for East Cambridgeshire District Council, said:

“HSE will be talking to local businesses that are currently open and visiting and inspecting sites in and around East Cambridgeshire to understand how they are managing risks in line with their specific business activity.

“Being COVID-secure needs to be the priority for all businesses, it is a legal duty for businesses to protect their workers and others from harm and this includes taking reasonable steps to control the risk and protect people from coronavirus. For some, this may mean reviewing their currently procedures and making additional business adjustments to be COVID-secure.

“All businesses are in scope for spot checks which means businesses of any size, in any sector can receive an unannounced check to ensure they are COVID-secure.

“Throughout the past year our environmental health officers have been privy to some exemplar procedures which have been put in place by East Cambs businesses, however businesses do have a responsibility to continually review whether their processes are fit for purpose to make employees and customers feel safe.

“We advise employers to work with their employees when implementing changes, to help increase confidence in workers, customers and the local community.”

HSE has found some common issues across a range of sectors, that include failing to provide arrangements for monitoring, supervising and maintaining social distancing, and failing to introduce an adequate cleaning regime particularly at busy times of the day.

East Cambridgeshire District Council has published details of its third round of the Additional Restrictions Grant (ARG) scheme, which has widened its eligibility criteria to support more businesses affected by national restrictions.

The ARG scheme is designed to support businesses impacted by the COVID-19 restrictions in place from 26th December 2020 – 15th February 2021 that have not been eligible for the Local Restrictions Support Grant.

The ARG is a discretionary funding scheme managed by the district council to support businesses during periods of lockdown relating to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The grants will be paid as one-off grants and are for businesses who experienced a loss of income of over 30%, that was directly related to, or as a result of, the Tier 4 and national lockdown restrictions in place between 26th December 2020 and 15th February 2021.

These businesses must be either a customer-facing business whose primary activity is the sale of goods or services to the public on a face-to-face basis that were able to remain open during restrictions and lockdown but were severely impacted, or a business that does not have a business rate account that was legally required to close during Tier 4 or national lockdown restrictions.

Ineligible businesses include those allowed to be open that do not rely on offering in-person services, businesses that have chosen to close but not required to and businesses that are unable to demonstrate a significant loss of income of at least 30% due to COVID-19.

A full list of businesses that were required to close can be found on the GOV.UK website. If your business was legally required to close and you do have a business rates account, you may be eligible for a Local Restrictions Support Grant.

Councillor David Brown, Chairman of the Finance and Assets Committee, said:

“The council knows that this is a challenging time for local businesses, so we are pleased to be able to offer another round of discretionary funding for those who have not been eligible for previous schemes.

“We urge businesses to check their eligibility in order to ensure they receive the funding they are entitled to. It is also important to note that the eligibility for these grants is not the same as the Local Restrictions Support Grants and the Closed Business Lockdown Payment and aims to open up funding further to those who have not been recognised by these grants.”

As part of the ARG scheme, closed businesses that do not have a business rates account may be entitled to £5,000 if they are a community facility such as a village hall, £5,000 if they operate from a domestic property or £6,000 if they operate from a commercial property.

Open customer-facing businesses, with or without a business rates account, that were allowed to be open during Tier 4 restrictions and the national lockdown but were severely impacted, are eligible for a £4,000 grant.

Businesses that meet the eligibility requirements for the ARG scheme, can prove that they were open for business as usual before 26th December, have suppliers or customers that were required to close from 26th December and can demonstrate a loss of income of 30% or more, are invited to submit an application to the District Council.

Businesses can apply online, by requesting an application form by emailing covid19businessgrants@eastcambs.gov.uk or by telephone by calling 01353 665555.

The closing date for applications for the scheme is 5pm on 19th March 2021.

The Additional Restrictions Grant, which is in addition to the Local Restrictions Support Grant announced last week, will focus on supporting two priority categories with the central government funding; those businesses legally required to close but who do not have a business rates assessment and businesses who haven’t legally been forced to close, but have been severely impacted by restrictions in place to control the spread of COVID-19.

The grant is a one-off payment of £2,000 which will be paid to cover the 28 day period from 5th November to 2nd December 2020.

Businesses deemed to be severely impacted by COVID-19 restrictions include those where a considerable amount of revenue is associated with organisations who have been required to legally close, for example, the retail, hospitality, and leisure sectors. As part of their application, businesses that fall within these criteria will need to be able to demonstrate that at least 75% of their revenue comes from these sectors.

To be eligible for the Additional Restrictions Grant your business must operate in East Cambridgeshire and have been open before the restrictions came into force on 5th November. Businesses must also have relatively high ongoing fixed property costs, which can include rent or a mortgage for the business’ property and have experienced a significant loss of income directly related to the national lockdown restrictions.

Businesses will be required to provide evidence of their fixed property costs and loss of income.

Councillor David Brown, Chairman of the Finance and Assets Committee, said:

“The Local Restrictions Support Grant will go some way to support those businesses who have been legally forced to close during the second lockdown, however the Additional Restrictions Grant aims to take one step further and support a number of businesses who have taken a considerable hit due to their revenue being connected to those sectors who have temporarily shut their doors.

“Unlike the Local Restrictions Grant, where the Council has identified eligible businesses, we are looking for organisations to come forward for the Additional Restrictions Grant and apply.

“If you think your business may be entitled to funding, please do get in touch so we can help as many eligible businesses as possible.”

Businesses not eligible for the Additional Restrictions Grant include:

• Organisations who are able to continue to trade, because they do not depend on providing direct in-person services from the premises and can operate their services effectively remotely

• Businesses that have chosen to close, but have not been required to close as directed by central government

• Businesses that were in administration, are insolvent or where a striking-off notice has been made, are also not eligible for the grant.

• Businesses which have already receive grant payments that equal the maximum levels of EU State Aid permitted under the De minimis and the COVID-19 Temporary State Aid Frameworks

Enterprise East Cambridgeshire has launched a new digital information hub for businesses across the district to help them plan for the end of the UK transition period at the end of the year.

The UK Transition, also known as Brexit, is due to come to an end on 31st December 2020 and will bring about a series of changes to the flow of people, data, goods and services between the UK and the EU.

This will particularly affect those businesses who sell goods to the EU, travel to the EU for work purposes, employ overseas nationals, receive personal data from contacts in the EEA and provide services in the EU.

On the Enterprise East Cambs website, businesses from a range of different industries can find guidance relevant to them as well as useful links to signpost them to further resources.

Councillor David Brown, Chairman of the Finance and Assets Committee at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “From January 1st 2021, the UK will leave the single market and customs union and businesses need to prepare for the inevitable changes this will bring.

“It is critical that businesses use this time to implement all of the relevant policies and procedures to ensure they can still operate and Enterprise East Cambs’ UK transition hub is a great resource that businesses can use to achieve this.

“I would urge all businesses to ulitise the support and guidance from the hub and prepare for the UK’s exit from the European Union on December 31st.”

Specific guidance is provided for sectors from automotive to retail and construction to life sciences.

East Cambridgeshire District Council’s online survey to assess the impact of COVID-19 on local businesses and tailor its future support is closing soon.

The purpose of the survey is to capture information about how the pandemic has affected businesses and provide an overview of the predicted long-term effects. The council will then use this data to further tailor the support and advice it provides as part of its COVID-19 recovery plan.

Councillor Ian Bovingdon, Chairman of the COVID-19 Working Group, said:

“We’ve had a terrific response already from this survey, but we want to urge as many local organisations as possible to complete the survey before the deadline.

“COVID-19 recovery remains one of our top priorities and we’re here to support both businesses and residents.

“With this data, we can better understand how organisations have been affected and what concerns they have for the months ahead.

“This means we can provide additional help and support to help them get back on their feet.”

The survey covers everything from the financial impact of business disruption, measures taken to cope with the impact of the pandemic and if support was obtained from the Small Business COVID-19 Grant Funding schemes.

East Cambridgeshire District Council is urging businesses to check their eligibility for the small business and retail, hospitality and leisure COVID-19 grants.

The Council has so far paid £11,355,000, 72% of available funding and is waiting on responses from the remaining eligible businesses in order to process their applications.

The Council is doing its upmost to ensure that grants are paid to all eligible businesses. It has contacted over 1300 businesses advising them on what they need to do to apply for the grants.

To date it has received completed applications from 933 of those contacted.

Council data shows that the lowest response rates are from the following types of eligible businesses and organisations:

• smaller businesses with a rateable value of less than £15,000
• community and sports group facilities
• businesses who receive rate relief

Even though community and sport group facilities, are not classed as businesses they are eligible for funding. Businesses who don’t pay business rates, due to receiving full rate relief, are also eligible for funding and respond to the council.

As part of the government’s COVID-19 support package, a £25,000 cash grant is being provided for retail, hospitality and leisure businesses that are operating from premises with rateable value between £15,000 and £51,000. Businesses in these sectors with a property that has a rateable value of up to £15,000 may be eligible for a grant of £10,000.

Small business grant funding of £10,000 is also available for all businesses in receipt of small business rate relief or rural rate relief.

East Cambridgeshire District Council is advising organisations in these sectors to double check if they have heard from the council and, if they haven’t, to check their eligibility on the East Cambridgeshire District Council dedicated COVID-19 business support page: https://www.eastcambs.gov.uk/content/coronavirus-information-businesses

The Council needs to receive a completed declaration form before grants can be processed.

“But we can’t provide this funding unless we receive the completed application forms. We are therefore encouraging those that have not submitted their completed applications to do so. 

“I understand that there may be some who are wary of accepting this funding, to these businesses I would like to make it clear that this is a grant, not a loan, and does not need to be paid back.

“This funding is there to help you survive this pandemic and we want to make sure you are provided with as much support as possible in order to do so.”

Councillor Anna Bailey, Leader of East Cambridgeshire District Council, said, “Our priority during this time is to help local businesses survive this pandemic.

“This is why we are looking at trends in the types of businesses that we haven’t yet heard from in order to communicate with them and help them identify their eligibility for funding.

“I urge those that haven’t returned their applications to return their form as soon as possible. And ask those that do not want to accept the grant to please let us know so that we can update our records and reallocate funds to other businesses.

“I would also like to ask businesses to let us know if they have received a letter addressed to the previous owner so that we can update their information and ensure funding is provided.”

East Cambridgeshire District Council has also been working with Anglia Revenues Partnership on the Business Rates discount scheme which will be applied automatically for all eligible businesses.  This is the only area where funding will be provided automatically.

On the 2nd May, central government announced a discretionary fund to accommodate certain small businesses previously outside the scope of the business grant funds scheme. Once further information on eligibility criteria has been confirmed, the council will provide further details on their website and through their social media channels.

The council has contacted more than 1,300 businesses in the area informing them that they are eligible for financial support and instructing them on what they need to do to apply for the grants.

To date, the council has only received applications from approximately half of eligible businesses in the area.

Businesses are eligible if they receive small business rate relief or rural rate relief and can check if they receive this by looking on their business rates statement.

Farmers and Chip Shops Come Together for Huge Charity Push

Potato wholesaler Isle of Ely Produce who supply chipping potatoes to fish and chip shops across the UK from Ely, Cambridgeshire are today launching a scheme to help the NHS by raising up to £20,000 for our national heroes from its farming partners. In a recent survey (of what is best about the UK) 2,000 Brits placed the NHS at the top of the list, and Fish and Chips at Number 2 so they think it makes sense for them to try to help at this time of need.

They have teamed up with many of their Field to Frier Cambridgeshire partner farmers including AL Lee Farming Company , P J Lee & Sons, J Gilbert & Sons, Legge Farms, HG Bliss Farms Ltd and N Balcomb & Son (Kent) so that they can together give something back to the NHS & its charities.

It is something that Isle of Ely director Oliver Boutwood has been thinking about for a couple of weeks, and now he is happy it is happening.  He said “During this crisis we have seen chip shops giving discounted meals to the NHS across the country, and we wanted to help and show the NHS that our farmers are right behind them too. Our Field to Frier network has seen us open our farms to chip shops, create a national fish and chip award, and now we have joined together to help raise funds for NHS charities.”

“This initiative is open to all fish and chips shops and their wholesalers, who can all do their bit in helping to raise up to £20,000. Our farmers have committed a donation from every bag sold for this fund.”

Isle of Ely Produce provides over 2m bags of chipping potatoes to fish and chip shops across the UK via local wholesalers from ‘Field to Frier’ recommended farms every year. They can arrange continuous delivery of potatoes across the whole of the UK to all chip shops.

They are still recommending however fish and chip shops only open if they can follow the letter of the law and government guidelines.

This scheme will also be open to shops who open at a later date too (when conditions allow). It is also open to shops both big and small who can together through their wholesaler can all help to make a difference. The scheme closes on Friday 19th June.

This is the third year of Reverse Advent for Platinum Properties in order to do something positive within the local community.

Supporting Platinum Properties in supplying food to be included in their Reverse Advent goes some way to meeting the challenges faced by the foodbank in providing a minimum of three days’ nutritionally-balanced emergency food to people who have been referred in crisis, as well as support to help people resolve the crises they face. 

Christmas can be a difficult time for those in need and Reverse Advent is a great way for everyone to get involved in a worthwhile event and make a huge difference for just a couple of pounds to those who wish to partake in the Christmas spirit of giving!

As part of their Reverse Advent Platinum Properties are asking the general public to make donations of non-perishable food items.

As a nation we don’t expect anyone to be left hungry or destitute, but the truth is that illness, disability, family breakdown or the loss of a job can happen to any of us and leave us in a situation we least expected desperately trying to make ends meet.

The Food Bank doesn’t just supply food, but helps people break free from poverty by providing additional support to help people resolve the crises that they face. Food banks rely on the support of local communities to help end hunger.

So, after months of hard work, we are actually approaching the opening day for The Cherry Tree in Haddenham.

This family run Cafe / Bar is aiming to become a community hub, and a much needed local amenity.

We have decided against a big opening event as there’s just too much to do to get the place ready in time. We open for business on Saturday the 5th of October! As the intention is to meet the varying needs of the community, we will be changing and evolving as time goes on, trialling different suggestions and ideas offered by people living locally. 

Rebuilding, rewiring, reroofing, replastering, refurbishing, repainting and redecorating are now finally entering the final phases. New doors, new windows, new garden design and innovative ideas have been put into place.

We are blessed to have a son in law like our Teddy and his side kick Dan, (E Hancock home improvements) who could probably promote themselves to builder and master of all trades! Their carpentry skills, hard work and creative minds have been invaluable. Without Teddy, this project would most definitely have collapsed (literally!)

So, while still finalising the timetable of events and activities, here are some of the things we will have on offer:

• Story time under the Cherry Tree
• Craft sessions for the under 5s 
• Bicycle repair sessions
• Midwife mornings (where women can come for feeding support, baby weighing, antenatal advice, reassurance checks in pregnancy and many other services as needed)
• Pizza and Prosecco/pint evenings (Fridays only to start with) 
• Quiz nights will take place once a month, where teams can compete for some fun and some cash prizes. 
• Outdoor cinema events have been suggested by a couple of local folk, which we think is a great idea. Obviously we’ll wait for warmer weather to return first! 

The space we are creating is for people to use, relax and enjoy! Breakfasts, light lunches and afternoon teas are on offer or just a place to pop in for a Hot Numbers coffee and a piece of yummy home made cake!

Evening food will take the form of food vans, pizza nights and the dish of the day to accompany a different evening events. There will be a selection of bottled beers and ciders. A wine list, has been carefully compiled. This seems to have needed a great deal of tasting and “market research“! A great selection of gins will also be available to try. There will be a collection of other spirits and our manager, Chris, is hoping to make a name for himself through the cocktail evenings that he’ll be running (not sure whether, he’ll rival Tom Cruise, but a blokes got to try!)

We have been overwhelmed by the support and kindness shown to us by local people. We will do our upmost to make the Cherry Tree a thriving village institution once again.

The Cherry tree that was taken down by Punch Taverns has now been replaced by a beautiful mature Cherry Tree; a gift from Barchams. This new tree looks fabulous in its place of honour and will provide lovely shady areas in years to come.

Quite a few events have been booked already! With 2 ‘gender reveal’ parties (this is where the gender of a baby is revealed to friends and family after the 20 week scan, in case anyone was wondering), one baby shower, one hen do, one 60th birthday party, one wedding and two work parties, Christmas afternoon teas, all booked before we’ve even opened. We hope to be kept very busy!

We really are looking forward to welcoming everyone to the lighter, brighter, safer Cherry Tree. See you soon!

Reggae Reggae Sauce entrepreneur and Dragons’ Den winner, Levi Roots, is confirmed as headline speaker at East Cambs Business Boost 2019 alongside Google and ex- Special Forces’ Jem Hills.

Annual business event East Cambs Business Boost, which is now in its third year, has been created by East Cambridgeshire District Council and Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce and will be held at Littleport Leisure Centre on November 14th.

Over 400 businesses from across the region are expected to attend the event’s uniquely blended networking, business showcasing and keynote speakers – this year with the theme of “RISE” to reflect growth and success.

Headline speaker Levi Roots shot to fame after his memorable appearance on Dragons’ Den.

He will be speaking to local businesses about his journey from street-vendor to a multi-million-pound brand success.

Levi Roots secured investment from Dragons Peter Jones and Richard Farleigh for his brand Reggae Reggae sauce which can now be found in supermarkets across the United Kingdom.

“It’s an immersive real life experience where a group of family, friends, workmates hunt for clues in an unfamiliar setting trying to work out how to decode hidden messages, open locked boxes, ultimately to escape from the room within sixty minutes. Players witness a roller coaster of emotions; anticipation, frustration, the reward of opening a box and the euphoria of succeeding in time.”

“I began talks with Oliver Cromwell House back in the summer of 2016. The first puzzle launched in September that year. The building is a real gem and the game takes place in the historic 17^th century oak panelled tithe room which definitely has the “wow factor”.

“The current puzzle is Locked in at the Cromwell Arms reflecting the period during the mid 1800s when the House was actually a public house. The aim of the mission is to thwart an attempt on the life of her majesty Queen Victoria by an anarchist group calling itself the Lord Protectors League. 

“We will be launching a new puzzle in the autumn – I can’t say much, but it centres on the curious disappearance of an Edwardian antiquarian who reportedly dabbled with the occult.”

The Cherry Tree Pub on Duck Lane, Haddenham has recently been bought by the Taylor family.

The building is now undergoing major renovations, and we are hoping to re-open the doors towards the end of the summer. It will no longer be run as a pub in the traditional sense. Our aim is that it will provide tea / coffee and a range of good quality meals and snacks, thereby serving the needs of the wider community.  

It will be fully licensed, offering a selection of wines, beers and ciders and spirits, (including a good selection of gins!) Opening at 8 am, we will be offering bacon rolls, sausage baps and a few healthier breakfast options. Light lunches will give way to afternoon teas, which in turn will be followed, on selected evenings, by Pizza evenings, quiz nights and street food events.

As an experienced midwife, Siobhan is going to be offering “Midwife Mornings” where pregnant women can pop in for friendly advice or an extra antenatal check and new parents can pop in for support and advice and even weigh their baby. Feeding support will be on hand in a friendly and comfortable environment. Older siblings will be able to play in the child friendly area and will be able to enjoy plenty of fun activities and events (such as ‘messy play mornings’) with Hannah, who is an experienced Primary School teacher.

We will offer a selection of specialist teas and coffees, with Chris being our skilled barista and resident coffee snob! Yummy home-baked cakes and scones will be available throughout the day and for those who enjoy being spoiled, a deluxe afternoon tea will be a tempting option. We already have our first “hen do” booked!

We are passionate about serving the needs and preferences of the local community.

We really want to make this a local hub. With this in mind, things may be rather “fluid” initially, changing to meet the demands of Haddenham and the surrounding area. If something we try isn’t popular, we’ll try something else. We are hoping to create a relaxed “home from home” environment for all to enjoy.  We’re currently looking into making the premises wheelchair accessible and dog-friendly. With climate change and energy efficiency a hot topic in the news at the moment, businesses are invited to learn more about how they can be more sustainable and reduce their carbon outputs at a free energy efficiency workshop at the e-Space North business centre in Littleport, Ely on Tuesday 11th June, 8.30-10am.

The breakfast event is being hosted by the Business Energy Efficiency (BEE) programme, in partnership with Enterprise East Cambs.

Businesses will hear from industry experts who will provide an overview of the business case for investing in energy efficiency, explaining the importance of measuring, monitoring and managing energy use, highlighting best practice with key industry examples and exploring the grant funding opportunities available to your business to make significant cost and carbon savings.

Since the (BEE) programme launched in Spring 2017, the programme has supported over 200 SMEs, identifying cost savings of over £1.2million and potential carbon reductions of over 6,000 tonnes.

Using funding secured from the European Regional Development Fund, BEE offers grant funding up to £20,000 in financial support for a number of measures including; LED Lighting; Heating & Cooling; Insulation; Solar PV & Battery Storage; and Electric Vehicles.

The project is being delivered by the environmental charity PECT, in partnership with Nwes.

The Ely based agency received the ‘Best in County’ title for Cambridgeshire at the prestigious ESTAS 2019. The award was announced by Phil Spencer, the TV property expert at a lavish luncheon & ceremony at the Grosvenor House, Park Lane London attended by 1,000 of the UK’s top property professionals.
