SGM Autumn Talks: The Golden Age of Pub Building & Beer Tasting
October 17, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Join us for the 3rd in our Autumn Lecture Series at the Stained Glass Museum for a talk by Geoff Brandwood, “The Golden Age of Pub Building” and enjoy Beer Tasting by Mile Tree Brewery
The years around 1900 saw an explosion of pub-building both in terms of numbers and the sheer quality of what was put up. In this richly illustrated talk, Geoff will explore the background to this phenomenon and examine the rich variety of turn-of-the-century pubs. He will show how pubs then were very different from pubs today in terms of layout and organisation. He will also focus on the various arts of the pub interior, including decorative glass, that made them special places.
The talk will be followed by a beer tasting with Mile Tree Brewery. Bottles will be available for sale on the night (cash only).
Geoff Brandwood has for nearly two decades been a member of CAMRA’s Historic Pubs Group, which is dedicated to identifying, recording and campaigning for what remains of our historic pub heritage. He has lectured and written widely including CAMRA’s Britain’s Best Real Heritage Pubs and co-authored English Heritage’s best-selling Licensed to Sell: the History and Heritage of the Public House.
