Viva Soham hit the world famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival with two musicals

Viva Arts and Community Group, Soham, are currently preparing to take two full scale comedy-musicals; ‘A Slice of Saturday Night’ and ‘Sister Act’, to the world famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival this August.

Over 70 people will be travelling together from Soham to Edinburgh including performers, musicians, backstage volunteers and creative professionals- each volunteering their time to provide the most professional theatrical experience to the Viva Membership.

Both shows will play every day at the Festival from Monday 12th August until Saturday 17th August. The troupes also have performance slots reserved on the prestigious Royal Mile where they will be promoting their shows to the festival crowds.

The two shows will be performed in Soham throughout two weeks in July, both to give the show teams a chance to perform their work before the hit the Fringe and to give local supporters a chance to enjoy the shows at home!

The first of the two musicals; ‘A Slice of Saturday Night’ will be performed by Viva’s young adult group and is a fabulously funny, nostalgic romp back to the swinging sixties. The show is set in a night club where young love, teenage dreams, fashion and music are the order of the day. The show will be performed in a purpose built pop-up theatre inside the Ross Peers Sports Centre, Soham on 11th-13th July at 7.30pm.

The second musical, ‘Sister Act’, is a well-loved favourite of many. It tells the story of disco diva Delores Van Cartier who is placed in protective custody, disguised as a nun in a convent. Delores breathes new life into the choir and the community and is, quite frankly, hilarious while doing it! The show will take place at St Andrew’s Church, Soham on 17th-19th July 2019 at 8pm. Viva triumphs at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival!

Viva returned to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year with not one but two shows. They have arrived home all in one piece with two sell out shows and two 5 star reviews!
It has been a busy week for our cast and production members at the famous Fringe Festival in Edinburgh. Viva travelled with over 70 people from the cast, aged 15 and up, to the production team, volunteers, family, parents and friends for a week of musical fun with Half a Sixpence and Avenue Q. Viva returned to Greenside Venue where they first performed in 2005 with the show Fame.
Dan Schumann, director of Half a Sixpence, said ‘It was a fantastic week and both casts were an absolute pleasure to have on board for the project. With some of our cast returning to the festival, after performing in past years, and the whole cast of Half a Sixpence being new to the scene they gave it everything they had and behaved like true professionals from beginning to the end.’
Viva works in the local area to provide as many opportunities as possible to who would like to be involved. The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is a chance to perform to a completely different audience as well as performing acapella on the Royal Mile and handing out leaflets to advertise your own shows. It is a great confidence booster and opportunity for the young people to get out and about and experience something new.
Viva returns on Thursday 24^th September for our annual open evening where we will be announcing the full line up for the Viva year running from September 2015 to August 2016. Viva offers opportunities in the performing arts for the local community, from the age of 8 plus, whether it be on stage or supporting backstage in costumes, props and set building. After returning from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with five sell out shows Avenue Q are not done yet! They will be performing at the ADC Theatre in Cambridge on Thursday 10^th, Friday 11^th and Saturday 12^th September.
