The Littleport Public Hall was besieged by an angry mob during a visit by Suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst to the village in 1910.

As celebrations start to commemorate the centenary of some British women being granted the vote, Spotted in Ely looks back on an unlikely visit to the Fen village.

The hall was completely rammed during Mrs Davidson’s visit, with anti-Suffragette demonstrators trying to disrupt the meeting, according to an article published in the Cambridge Independent Press on December 9, 1910.
“The hall was besieged by a large crowd, and as soon as the doors were opened, there was such a rush of people that the building was packed in a very short time.”

Emmeline Pankhurst

Once the doors were locked, a “considerable crowd” gathered outside, with some trying to drown out Mrs Pankhurst’s speech.
“Some behaved in a disorderly way, kicking and knocking the doors unmercifully.”
No stranger to controversy and outrage, the women’s rights activist continued regardless.
“Mrs Pankhurst gave an eloquent and forceful address, although hailed at times with cheers and hisses, she successfully dealt with every attempt at interruption that occurred,” according to the Cambridge Independent Press report.

Anti-Suffragette postcards were popular at the time.

Born as Emmeline Goulden in 1858, Mrs Pankhurst went on to found the Women’s Franchise League in 1889, which campaigned to give women the vote in local elections.
In 1903 she helped found the Women’s Social and Political Union, which gained notoriety for encouraging civil disobedience.
It was during such an act that fellow Suffragette Emily Davison was famously killed after throwing herself under King George V’s horse at the 1913 Epsom Derby in protest at the government’s continued refusal to grant women the vote.
Mrs Pankhurst was herself arrested on numerous occasions and went on hunger strike in prison, being violently force fed.

Anti-Suffragette postcards were popular at the time.

In 1918 the Representation of the People Act gave women over 30 with property rights the vote.
Mrs Pankhurst died on June 14, 1928.
The following month, all British women over 21 were granted the right to vote.

Former school governor Richard Morgan says it’s important to ensure that there are enough school places to cope with Ely’s rapid development.
One of four candidates standing for the City Council (North Ward), Richard says residents in the north of the city are not being “treated fairly” when it comes to expansion.

“800 homes are due to be built on Highflyer Farm on land owned by Church Commissioners; 1200 homes on 200 acres between Lynn Road and the A10 owned by Endurance Estates; plus a further 1000 homes at a later date.
“Only part of Kings Avenue (Cathedral View built by Barratt Homes) has been adopted by Cambridgeshire County Council due to technicalities with Church Commissioners and Anglian Water. If elected I will use my best efforts to remedy this as soon as possible. Residents trying to sell now are having a hard time of it and we don’t want these problems being revisited on the new homes.”

Other priorities including safeguarding the future of the Princess of Wales Hospital: “According to NHS England our hospital sees 40,000 patients a year! The closure of the hospital would be bad news for many local people and would mean even more traffic on the A10. I’m determined we should do all we can to keep these important services in Ely.”
He also says that Ely’s Market Square should not be allowed to be “over developed by greedy developers”.
The by-election for a new parish councillor will take place across three polling stations from 7am until 10pm on October 6.
Richard will be up against independent candidate Mark Cooney (Spotted in Ely), Edward Bengt Carlsson Browne (Labour Party) and John Yates (Independent).
Richard, who has lived in Ely for 37 years, says: “Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of Ely. Our tourism businesses also benefit, when we go on holiday we generally seek out destinations that offer us the sense of being somewhere, not just anywhere.”
Calling himself “the progressive candidate in this election”, he adds: “I want our children to play in a safe environment and to have robust play equipment. I want our roads and pavements to be safe for drivers and pedestrians going to and from the town and the new leisure centre. Turning street lights off is not a solution!”
You can read Richard’s manifesto here: richard-morgan-manifesto
Postal votes for the by-election will be sent out on Thursday 22nd September to those who have registered.

Spotted in Ely editor and creator Mark Cooney has thrown his hat into the ring, announcing that he will stand for the Parish of Ely’s North Ward By-Election, and promising more transparency from local politicians if elected.
The by-election for a new parish councillor will take place across three polling stations from 7am until 10pm on October 6.
Mark’s priorities include campaigning to save Ely’s Minor Injuries Unit, a cause that Spotted in Ely has been championing and leading on since news first broke of its planned closure.

He also pledges to improve the city’s infrastructure and roads, increase affordable housing, expand free wifi to support local businesses and enhance youth facilities. Over the past three months he has been battling to reopen Ely’s American park and his persistence has paid off, with Lakenheath’s media officer announcing that the popular adventure park will be up and running again soon.
In Mark’s manifesto, he asks: “Do you know what happens behind closed doors at your local council? This is why many councils are seen in a bad light and more often than not people say that politicians are out of touch and ignore their voters.
“I would look to keep a public journal (obviously keeping discretion when needed) so that you can see on a daily/weekly basis what councillors do and how decisions are made. Councillors represent you – and should be as accountable and transparent as possible.”
Mark, who is standing as an independent, will be up against Edward Bengt Carlsson Browne (Labour Party), Richard Gareth Llewelyn Morgan (no description given at time of standing) and John Yates (Independent).
Spotted in Ely invites other candidates to share their manifestos with us too, so that we can publish them.
Postal votes for the election will be sent out on Thursday 22nd September to those who have registered.
