What would future homes look like if children were in charge of designing them?

You can capture a glimpse of some of these designs on building site banners next to The Shade Primary School in Soham.

Youngsters at The Shade were invited to enter a competition to draw their “home of the future” by developers Palace Green Homes.

The drawings are now displayed on printed banners at the building site next door to the school.
Construction has been underway on The Fledglings site since September on 13 new dwellings, including four houses and nine apartments, on land opposite the school, on the corner of Kingfisher Drive.
Katie McKay, assistant head of The Shade, said children had shown great interest in the building works, which are due to be finished this summer.
“We took our reception class over in November to meet the site manager and learn about how houses are built, which they thoroughly enjoyed. The children are so proud to see their artwork printed onto the banners in the playground. The subject matter has been a great talking point in class.”
The winning artworks were chosen by representatives of Palace Green Homes and partner community land trust, Thrift CLT, with the winners awarded book tokens.
Phil Rose, head of development at Palace Green Homes, said: “We are delighted that the children have shown such enthusiasm towards our competition. The artworks look fantastic and really brighten up the site boundary.
“We have always maintained a strong relationship with The Shade Primary School and will continue to keep in close contact with them throughout the construction period.”
He said The Fledglings will provide “much needed affordable homes for local people.”
Meanwhile site manager Paul Elliot, of constructors E N Suiters, has been nominated for a ‘Pride in the Job’ award by inspectors on behalf of the National House Building Council (NHBC).
The prestigious award is awarded to those who demonstrate high standards for site management, presentation and working conditions.
