Christmas has come early for five charities, thanks to the fundraising efforts of Ely College students.

The college held its first Charity Day yesterday, with the five houses competing to raise the most cash for their chosen charities.

This action packed event, raising almost £2000, was one of the Cambridge Meridian Academies Trust’s (CMAT’s) PLEDGES and Futures Days, where students are given the opportunity to develop extra skills and take part in extra-curricular experiences.

Head girl Jaden Coe described the day as “awesome”, saying the games and activities had put everyone in a “very Christmassy” mood.
Before the big day, students got to vote for their house charities and then came up with a range of fundraising ideas.
The five charities benefitting are Arthur Rank Hospice (Scott House), Little Miracles (Etheldreda House), C9 Cancer Ward at Addenbrooke’s Hospital (Franklin House), Make a Wish Foundation (Turing House) and the Restricted Growth Association (Bishop Laney Sixth-Form College).

Jaden said: “I enjoyed working with everyone in my form group to come up with an idea to raise the most money… While it is nice to add some friendly inter-house competitions to the mix, we are really pleased the money will go to help children and their families who deserve it. We want to thank our form tutors for helping us raise so much.”

Throughout the day the school was divided into event areas including a food court, media zone, disco and haunted house.
Staff did not get off lightly either – a “soak the teacher” event proved very popular!

From karaoke to Elfie Selfie stations, console room to sweet casinos, there was something for everyone!
The event was supported by the local community, with Gourmet Brownie and the Ely Fire Service joining in the fun.
College principal Richard Spencer thanked everyone who supported the event.
He said: “PLEDGES and Futures Days are so important because they play a vital part in helping our students to develop empathy as well as more tangible skills such as the teamwork and responsibility that comes with event planning.”
More fundraising events will take place later this year.
