An early chance for the home side, as they are award a penalty, opting to kick, but the upright post came to the aid of the Tigers as the bounced off the post and to safety, but it was only a brief spell before the home side had points on the board, from a line out on the right Walsham with a try on the left hand side, the conversion was missed as the ball once again cannoned off the upright, with 15 minutes on the clock another penalty to the home side, this time in front of the posts, but this time the upright didn’t come to rescue of the Tigers as the home side lead 8-0

A quickly taken penalty for the home side saw them cross the line once more to extend their lead, to 13-0, as they once more wasted the conversion start, on 32 minutes the Tigers went down to 14 as they received a yellow card for a late tackle.

First half injury time, the home side score again, as Ely fail to make their tackles count, with the conversion added to lead at the break 20-0

The second half started with e penalty to Ely, Matt McCarthy opting to kick but the ball fell short, A list of errors while Tigers were pushing towards the Walsham try line, saw Walsham break free,  adding another try to the scoreboard as the score under the posts, conversion added, another penalty to Ely, saw them opt for the kick, this time McCarthy added the points, more missed tackles saw the home side add to the scoreboard with another try and conversion saw a further try and conversion, the final score of the afternoon came as full time closed in, and it came from another mistake from the Tigers, as the home side added a further try and conversion to run out 39-3 winners

Tigers face league leaders, Norwich, this coming weekend at the Cambridge Commodities Park, as the injury list continues to grow for Des Lloyds side as he’ll need once again to make changes.

The East Cambridgeshire Climate Action Network is running an Imaginarium and wants locals to bring forth ideas on how to tackle the challenges of climate change in a fun way using paints, pens and modelling equipment to express themselves.

It’s a free event on this Saturday 12 October inside St Mary’s church in Ely which starts at 12 o’clock

Peter Bates, Chair of the Network said: “It’s a fun way to get people’s creative juices flowing and thinking about what they would like to see change in Ely and the surrounding areas that might enable us to live more easily and sustainably as we cope with the effects of climate change.”

Ely and East Cambridgeshire’s local MP Charlotte Cane will be attending this event and it is planned to also present the ideas to local politicians, planners, and other decision-makers.

Peter Bates said that the Ely Imaginarium event comes at a very appropriate time when East Cambridgeshire residents are soon to be asked their views on new Local Plans – that have to be prepared with residents. Based on their feedback the East Cambridgeshire District Council will create a future blueprint for the district. It will include details on how they can meet local and affordable housing needs, what can be done to help address climate change and bring back nature and how they can boost the local economy for the benefit of all.

“The Imaginarium provides local people with the opportunity to express their concerns in a more creative, fun way, rather than the formalised way that consultations often operate. We are hoping that local people will come forward with exciting ideas about dealing with the impact of climate change, using alternative ways of travelling that avoid polluting the environment or ways to stop flooding homes and ways to increase the biodiversity of our natural environment.”

The Imaginarium will be taking place on the same day as the Apple Fayre and Ely Cathedral’s Harvest Festival where 1000s of people will be attending. It is hoped that several hundred people will be able to present their ideas at the nearby Imaginarium in St Mary’s. It is financially supported by the City of Ely Council and East Cambridgeshire District Council, Cambridge Carbon Footprint and facilitated by professional community artists – Hilary Cox Condron from Cambridge and Ruth Marley of the Witchford-based Re-Imagine Resource Centre.

Everyone is welcome to come without any booking needed. Children under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

As part of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority’s ongoing mission to create a strong, sustainable economy and encourage high-growth businesses to flourish in the region, Dr Nik Johnson, Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough has today visited CMR Surgical, a worldwide surgical robotics business based in Ely.

Versius has been rolled out in NHS hospitals across the UK, delivering major benefits to both patients and hospitals as more operations as performed as keyhole surgeries across specialities including colorectal surgery, urology, gynaecology, and thoracic surgery.  Keyhole surgery is less invasive, and patients recover quicker and better, requiring shorter hospital stays.

The Combined Authority’s proactive approach to business engagement and investment has already seen substantial results.

Three years ago, the Combined Authority played a key role in supporting CMR Surgical’s decision to establish its global manufacturing facility in Ely, providing the infrastructure and incentives needed to attract this world-leading company to the region. The Armed Forces Covenant is a formal promise that together we acknowledge and understand that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, should be treated with fairness and respect in the communities, economy, and society they serve with their lives.

It also identifies that special consideration is appropriate in some cases, especially for those who have given most such as the injured and the bereaved.

Cllr Martin Goodearl, from Littleport, a former member of the Armed Forces and who took part in the signing, said: “This council is proud to recognise the invaluable contribution the Armed Forces have made, and I am honoured to be the council’s Armed Forces Covenant champion.

“As a council we regularly have close contact with current and former members of the Armed Forces. Some might face disadvantages compared to the general population, arising from service life, such as being unable to access certain services while serving overseas.

“As a council we work really hard to mitigate some of these disadvantages and go the extra mile to help those who have sacrificed the most.”

Eligible residents have until 21 December to apply for the benefit and still receive the £300 winter fuel payment from government. Applications received after that date will not qualify for the payment.

Anyone who needs help with applying for Pension Credit is advised to contact the community advice team at East Cambridgeshire District Council, or attend one of the council’s drop in sessions. These take place Monday to Friday, from 10am until 4pm. Drop-in sessions are also held at Soham library each Wednesday, 10am until midday, and in Littleport by St George’s Medical Centre from 10am until midday on a Friday.

Pension Credit tops up pension income and can help with day to day living costs. The benefit is worth on average £3900 per year and residents may be eligible to claim Pension Credit even if they own their home or have savings.

As well as the winter fuel payment, people receiving Pension Credit may also be able to get help with other heating costs, help with rent or Council Tax, a free TV licence for people over 75, and help with NHS services, such as dental treatment, glasses and transport costs for hospital treatment.

Councillor Anna Bailey, Leader of East Cambridgeshire District Council, explains: “Pension Credit is a valuable benefit that can help people with day-to-day costs and as we head into the winter months this could really make a difference with the increased costs of heating homes.

“I would encourage anyone who is unsure if they would qualify for Pension Credit, or who would like help to apply, to attend our community advice drop-in sessions to talk to our advisors.

“It is really important to apply now because, owing to the Pension Credit backdating rules, successful applications before 21 December will still receive the winter fuel payment.”

If you are unable to attend the drop-in sessions a home visit may be possible. Call the council on 01353 665555 and ask to speak to an advisor.

Pea shooting enthusiasts and curious spectators alike will gather this summer for this eccentric annual event, taking place in Witcham, near Ely in Cambridgeshire, on Saturday, July 13th, 2024.

From humble beginnings over 50 years ago, the World Peashooting Championship has evolved into a celebrated tradition, attracting participants from around the globe and garnering attention from national media outlets, including coverage on BBC’s Countryfile and in publications including the Guardian Weekend Magazine.

As the championship enters its 51st year, organisers are excited to announce a new era of peashooting, embracing tradition while welcoming innovation. Under the theme “Back to our roots” the event will introduce a brand new category: the “Traditional Peashooting Championship”. This category is designed to level the playing field, allowing newcomers and one-off visitors equipped with basic peashooters to compete against similarly equipped opponents.

“We’re thrilled to embark on this new chapter of the World Peashooting Championship,” said Catherine Hill, chair of the Witcham Events Committee. “By embracing our roots and welcoming all participants, we hope to ensure that this cherished tradition continues to thrive for generations to come.”

Des joins us from Watton RFC, where he held the position of DOR/Head Coach for 7 years. In that time, he re-energised the club, helping to re-introduce a second team and securing 2 promotions for the 1st XV. Prior to that he had also held the role of Head Coach at Swaffham RFC.

No stranger to the types of needs a grass roots organisation like Ely requires, Des has shown a willingness to contribute to all areas of the running of a club, having held a multitude of committee and coaching positions during his development. Des holds a level 2 RFU coaching qualification, as well as a level 4 sports masseuse and taping qualification. He is also a trained pitch side medic and mental health first aider.

He also comes to the club with the seal of approval from our new Club President, and previous Head Coach, Buzz Coulson. We were always keen for Buzz to be a part of the process and having sat down with Des at the club last month, he made it clear he felt he would be a good fit within the Tigers Family.

We are very happy to confirm Tim Mills will continue to be a part of the coaching setup, assisting Des in the role of defence coach. We will also be looking at other avenues to help assist Des, with the hope of future appointments to come.

Des had this to say on his appointment: “I am delighted to have the opportunity to join Ely Rugby Club. I enjoyed plenty of years playing against Ely back when I was growing up, playing for Swaffham. I have always been impressed with the set up that Ely has, starting with the Mini’s, all the way up to Seniors. I love the fact it has the family feel and that I’m able to join that family is something I’m looking forward to”.

New Club Chair Andy Gunbie added: “At the AGM we announced the appointment of Des Lloyd as the new first team coach. Des comes with an impressive CV, and has held many positions in his previous clubs over the years. Des is a qualified pitch side medic and physio, and we are looking at the potential for Des to run some ‘bookable’ physio sessions for club members and players. Welcome to the team Des, I’m looking forward to working with you in the years ahead”.

Sam Oakhill, Madison Ford and Elena Fraser will all represent England Under 17s in Eindhoven at the end of June, whilst Josh Braybrook and Piper Froment will travel to Czech Republic in mid-July for an Under 15s International Tournament.

The Vikings have seen a good number of their players being picked for international duty over the past few years, and it comes as no surprise that the club will have yet more representation in multiple England squads this summer.

Sam, Madison and Elena have all been attending the England Academy for some time now, and were all selected for the last Under 17s World Cup in 2023, where England finished 7th overall.

The three Korfballers, along with the rest of the England U17 squad, are raising money to fund their World Cup campaign in the Netherlands, and are taking part in a 2600 mile virtual sponsored walk.

Josh and Piper, who have both been attending the England Regional U15 Academy, are also looking to raise money for their trip to the Czech Republic.

Funding is vital for all five players to allow them to represent England in their respective international tournaments and help grow Korfball in this country.

Korfball is a mixed-team sport, consisting of four male and four female players on each team, that caters to all age groups and abilities.

The game, which is similar to basketball and netball, involves aiming to throw the ball into a 3.5-metre-high basket to score points.

Ely Vikings cater for players from the ages of seven up to 70, and train on Monday evenings at the Hive leisure centre.

Witchford Under 12s girls have won the league playing football the right way, in a positive environment, and we have had other league managers message congratulating the girls as, “the best team in the league that play football with a smile on their face and a positive attitude”.

Overall, coaches Jamie Mott and Craig Finbow are just incredibly proud of the girls for their hard work, team spirit, and amazing football attitude towards learning and bettering themselves. It’s fitting this season has ended with a trophy!

They clinched the title by winning 1-0 at home against 3^rd place Netherton, with a goal with 15 seconds remaining, to top the U12B league with 2 games left to play. A superb year in their first season of competitive football, having only played friendlies before reaching this age group.

They have won every home game so far, only losing 2 league games all season and have not lost since before Christmas.

Its an amazing achievement from the girls, having scored 48 league goals and only conceded 13. Their defence has been an amazing foundation but Hattie Ashton has lead the attack as top scorer with 34 goals in 19 games.

Congratulations girls, keep it up.

“Two of Us” was produced in 1987 for the BBC schools Scene series and gained notoriety for its portrayal of a same-sex relationship. At the time, the Thatcher government was preparing to introduce Clause 28, the law that banned the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality in school sex education.

The film, which explores the struggles of its central characters against the backdrop of growing up gay in the 80s, will be shown at Babylon Cinema on Sunday 9th June, at 7.30pm, at The Maltings, Ship Lane, Ely, CB7 4BB.

It will be introduced by academic and social historian Marcus Collins and followed by a Q&A discussion with producer/director Roger Tonge, writer Leslie Stewart and members of the cast. The event is being staged by Out in Fenland, an independent not-for-profit organisation which arranges LGBT+ history and cultural events.

Organiser Peter said: “We’re hoping this will be an enlightening and thought-provoking evening of cinema and discussion. The audience will be able to engage with the team behind this revolutionary film. We’ve lived through the rise and fall of Clause 28 and the film’s legacy remains important today.”

Two of Us: In the Shadow of Clause 28 is taking place on Sunday 9th June, 7:30pm, at Babylon Cinema.
