Pea shooting enthusiasts and curious spectators alike will gather this summer for this eccentric annual event, taking place in Witcham, near Ely in Cambridgeshire, on Saturday, July 13th, 2024.

From humble beginnings over 50 years ago, the World Peashooting Championship has evolved into a celebrated tradition, attracting participants from around the globe and garnering attention from national media outlets, including coverage on BBC’s Countryfile and in publications including the Guardian Weekend Magazine.

As the championship enters its 51st year, organisers are excited to announce a new era of peashooting, embracing tradition while welcoming innovation. Under the theme “Back to our roots” the event will introduce a brand new category: the “Traditional Peashooting Championship”. This category is designed to level the playing field, allowing newcomers and one-off visitors equipped with basic peashooters to compete against similarly equipped opponents.

“We’re thrilled to embark on this new chapter of the World Peashooting Championship,” said Catherine Hill, chair of the Witcham Events Committee. “By embracing our roots and welcoming all participants, we hope to ensure that this cherished tradition continues to thrive for generations to come.”

This year organisers aim to further strengthen the event with more stalls, entertainment, and children’s activities, creating a family-friendly day out for all ages. Local charities can apply for a free stall and the competition is also seeking sponsorships from local businesses.

The Council ran an artwork competition over the Easter Holidays based on the theme “Plant a tree for the Jubilee.”

Each winner will get to see their designs displayed on the side of an East Cambs Street Scene refuse and recycling lorry, shared on social media and made into posters.

First prize went to Martha Rickett, aged 10, whose winning watercolour painting features a young girl looking up at a tree with the slogan “The trees blossom and so do we.”

Her artwork will now be transformed into a giant four-metre banner which will be pasted onto the side of three recycling lorries and seen by residents as they work throughout the district. Her design will also be used to create a special Platinum Jubilee card which will be sent on behalf of the Council to Her Majesty the Queen.

Runner up designs were created by Iris Thompson, also aged 10, whose design features the lifecycle of a tree and Jack Ward, aged 7, who is encouraging everyone to “Plant more trees.” These designs will each be displayed on one lorry.

In keeping with the “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee” theme, the winners will also receive £50 of National Garden Gift Vouchers.

All competition entries will be on display at the Council Offices at The Grange in Nutholt Lane, Ely and used to create special Jubilee bunting to display in reception.

The competition is one of a number of activities being organised by the Council to help celebrate the Platinum Jubilee.

More than 100 trees are being planted throughout the District and logged on the Queen’s Green Canopy website. A commemorative beech tree was planted in Brinkley in March and on 30 May the county’s largest tree maze at Ely Country Park will be officially opened.

Chairman of the Council, Councillor Alan Sharp who selected the winning designs said: “We have been amazed by the high number of entries and the superb creativity of the artwork provided. I am so pleased so many young people in East Cambs have really got behind this initiative, which not only celebrates the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee but also helps raise awareness of the need to plant more trees and help look after our environment.”

Digital connectivity is becoming an essential utility for modern life – whether you use it for work, shopping, socialising or accessing public services.

The Connecting Cambridgeshire programme, led by Cambridgeshire County Council, is supporting ‘Get Online Week’, from 14th -18th October, to highlight how people can make the most of internet access and improve their digital skills.

Visitors to Ely Market and Soham town centre are being reminded that free public access Wi-Fi is available when they are out and about, and is helping to boost business as market traders can take online payments.

Shoppers and tourists visiting the Get Online Week stall on Ely Market on Thursday 17th October can get advice about using the free Wi-Fi, how to check their broadband speeds, and find out about local courses and clubs to help them get online.

There’s a free prize draw for a £100 tablet computer and other giveaways, funded by Good Things Foundation, the charity behind Get Online Week.

The free Wi-Fi networks in Ely and Soham were launched last year by Enterprise East Cambs (the economic development division of East Cambridgeshire District Council) working with local specialist company Air Broadband, and supported by the Connecting Cambridgeshire programme, as a trial for rolling out public access Wi-Fi to other market towns.

Market traders in Ely have welcomed the free Wi-Fi service and have asked for it to be extended. One said: “I use the Wi-Fi to take payments via my credit card reader. I believe it gives my customers more choice … it seems to work very well.”

Councillor David Brown, Chairman of the Finance and Assets Committee at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “The addition of free Wi-Fi not only benefits local market traders, but local residents and those who need to access the internet while they are out and about. We’re delighted to have rolled out free Wi-Fi in Ely and Soham and have plans to introduce this further throughout the district in the future.”

Depending on your location, look for “Ely-Free-Wifi” or “Soham-Free-Wi-Fi” on the list of available networks on your device and click “Connect” to get online. Market Traders in Ely have a separate, password protected, network of their own. Find out more here.

Free CambWifi, provided by Cambridgeshire County Council, is also available in over 150 public buildings across the county, including libraries, council offices and children’s centres, and is used to support a range of digital skills activities.

Cambridgeshire Skills formerly Cambridgeshire Adult Learning and Skills Service, offers IT among its Basic Skills courses and a range of vocational courses designed to help people find work or change employment. The Canaries faced Reading in the Premiership and duly thrashed them 7-1.
The game started quick and easy for Norwich as they sailed into a 5-0 lead before conceding a goal. The first half ended 6-1 with just one goal being scored in the second half.
Before the match and even before arriving, Fencabs in Ely took the ladies VIP Style in the new Jaguar and on arrival were then escorted to the Arbuckles VIP box with a served 3 course meal. Arbuckles owner John Murphy has a box at Carrow Road where he likes to watch his 2 sons Josh and Jacob as they play in the first team.
After the match, Natalie and Ellis got to meet the brothers as they came for photos and sign their programs.
Natalie contacted us and said, “We had the most amazing day, thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to experience such a great day out. It was enjoyable from start to finish, and were completely gutted the day is over”.
