Lighthouse operates for the benefit of people in Ely and the surrounding areas.

We already support over 200 people per week, all year round at The Lighthouse Centre. However, we are believing that with your backing, we can reach and support even more people so desperately in need.

We are a centre for all the community and our doors are open every day for people of all backgrounds, no matter their personal beliefs or situation in life.

Lighthouse is a central hub giving individuals a chance to access various help groups in a non-threatening environment with access to advice, support and follow-up mentoring.

We aim to bring together the community, offering practical help, support and enabling individuals to reach their full potential.

We strive to reduce the isolation of vulnerable people within our community in numerous ways. Facilitating the progression of individuals from a state of homelessness, with or without priority need, to a position of self-sufficiency within education and employment.

The centre also helps reduce the need for dependency on the local Foodbank and assists with ongoing support.

We work closely together with local and county councils, NHS services, and other organisations to give the support that is required for individuals in need of our care.

Helen Bavester, Treasurer of Soham Benevolent Association, states “We gave the food bank £1250.00 in cash and decided as a committee, that we would see if we could work in association with the new retail store in Fordham, Fresh and Proper- distributors of Morrisons, and see if we could by some goods at cost with the other £1000.00.  Joshua James, owner of Fresh and proper agreed to our idea, and they kindly ordered all Morrisons own brand goods at wholesale. Retail value would have been  £1450.00 so this added £450.00 value to our original £1000.00 Donation.” 

Joshua James states, “When the carnival committee came to me with this idea, I didn’t hesitate to get involved. It was a pleasure to work with the local community and I’d be happy to do it again in the future”.

On 4th October 2023, the goods came into Fresh and proper warehouse, we loaded the van and took it over to The Ely Food bank warehouse, where we unloaded it. Caroline at the Food bank was extremely grateful stating, “we’ve just had to go buy quite a few bits as our stocks have been so low, so this couldn’t have come a better time.”

The remaining £4,150 raised  was distributed to the following other organisations: Friends of Soham Village College, The Crescent Amenities Fund, Soham Comrades Band, SCA- Jigsaw Magazine, Scouts, Soham Over 60’s, Soham Lodge Care Home, Molyn Care, North Chapel, KD Academy, Pos+Bility, Soham Community Archive, Helping Hands Gardening, Bumbly Bees Music Group, Day Centre ( Monday Club), Hedgehog Corner, Soham Playgroup, Elysian Riding For Disabled, Kuk Sool Won, Army Cadets, Highfields I Pads appeal and Newmarket Majorettes.

Our 70th Anniversary was a great success and we look forward to our next Carnival to be held on SUNDAY 5th MAY 2024, SAVE THE DATE!

Students across school were inspired by those in Scott House, who have organised this year’s collection. Everyone donated an array of food to give to those in need, from baked beans to cornflakes. The donation was wholly organised by the students with form groups S-EHI and S-IBU taking the lead and making sure the large haul reached it final destination.

Richard Spencer, Principal at Ely College, said: “It is heart-warming to see our students voluntarily helping their community and those in need within it. At Ely College, we seek to develop well rounded individuals who are an active part of their communities and these students are a shining example of those values. They should be very proud of what they have achieved”.

December traditionally sees the College focus on the charity aspects of their PLEDGES system (Participation, Leadership, Excellence, Diversity, Giving, Environment and Service), as students plan activities for their dedicated fundraising day at the end of term.

This food drive sees the students going above and beyond as they start to understand the current demand on foodbanks. Ely Food Bank is open to all and was very grateful for all the students efforts. We would also would like to thank the parents at home who have supported students in giving a little more at this key time of the year.
