To say the past few months have been a whirlwind for Sebastien Scaux would be a big understatement.
Already an “Accredited +” LTA level 3 tennis coach, the 10is Academy coach opened a new tennis club in September, represented Cambridgeshire in the O45 and is now getting ready to compete on the ITF circuit (International Tennis Federation).
Only a few weeks ago, Sebastien decided to compete internationally, and this is now made possible by the fact that he is coached by Louis Cayer who coaches the likes of Jamie Murray, Joe Salisbury and even Sir Andy Murray.
What’s more, as part of his preparations for his first international competition, the Ely coach has spent the earlier part of the week honing his talent alongside Vijay Sundar a top 300 ATP player in singles and top 200 in doubles.
So, even this early into his competing career, Sebastien’s learning from the best.
“I’m blessed! It’s a pleasure and an honour to train with the best. To be the best version of yourself, you have to train with the best, so it’s a great opportunity for me.
“Now I’m learning, just trying to get as much knowledge as a I can. Listen. Observe. Take it all in. For me, it’s a dream.”
It certainly sounds as such. The possibility to work with Louis Cayer came about through the LTA National Coach Conference a few years ago.
Sebastien asked Louis for a photo and then connected via email. Now he is being mentored by the man who played an integral role in taking Jamie Murray to world No 1 in doubles and help Team GB win the Davis Cup.
“The week has been unbelievable. Being coached by one of the best coaches of all time and been hitting with a professional player was like a dream. Training with them is incredible: the level is the very highest.
Sebastien has been made to feel like one of the team, too. Not long into the week, Louis invited Sebastien for lunch.
“Everyone there is a professional, they don’t have time to waste. After training Louis and I had lunch and we were still working on tennis strategies and also on how to make 10is Academy a better place, how to help the players… It was amazing. Every word Louis says is a golden nugget. The whole time I was taking notes to be a better player and most importantly a better coach. His guidance is priceless, but the work is mine to do.
Sebastien is ready to pass on his newly acquired knowledge to the 10is Academy players who will be able to meet Louis in person next year when he will come to 10is Academy to give them a masterclass.
Louis wrote to Sebastien, “It was a great pleasure to coach you this week. Carry on the good work you are doing and keep your passion as it is the key to success.”
Sebastien’s passion and 100 per cent commitment to grow tennis and help the 10is Academy players reach their full potential has only been reinforced when working with Louis.
“The more work I put in the better I become,” Sebastien said. “There’s no shortcuts. The pressure is unbelievable, for sure, but I’m just enjoying the journey. It’s uncomfortable sometimes, but I’m enjoying every second of it.”
Crucially, Sebastien emphasises that he is in no rush despite the latest progress. “Competing is important to me but of course, taking 10is Academy to the next level is my priority. When I learn from the best, I can transmit some of that knowledge to the players and help them reach their potential.”
There will be tough challenges ahead but with focus, dedication, and hard work, 10is Academy can make it.
