While the LTA National League is taking a break, 10is Academy players had one more competition to play before the start of the school holidays: an internal competition and the “Road to Wimbledon”.
The “Road to Wimbledon” is the biggest junior tournament in British tennis and gives all 14U players the opportunity to progress through to compete on the world-famous grass courts at Wimbledon. The first stage of the competition took place at 10is Academy and King’s Ely in a sociable tournament for players and pupils rated between 10.2 and 7.1.
The 2021 10is Academy winners are Charlie McGuinness who defeated Joe Shackleton in the final tiebreak 7/3 and Tia Glenister who won against Stephanie Chirgadze taking the match with a hard-fought tiebreak 6/2 7/6 (7/5).
The winners of these events will now progress to the County Finals on 10th -11th July 2021. County finals winners will then be invited to compete in the National Finals at Wimbledon in August. Both runner-up players might be invited to attend the next round at Hills Road Tennis Centre.
Overall, the standard of tennis was very high with close fought matches throughout the entire tournament. Other winners on our internal competitions were James Reid (8 & Under), Maria Efremova and Joshua Newton for the 9 & Under, Sophie Hemmings (10 & Under) and Michael Harrison (18 & Under).
Our congratulations to all who took part and supported this event.
