An installation of ribbons at Ely Cathedral in support of victims of abuse

As part of a programme to mark a ‘Season of Safeguarding’, members of the public are being invited to show their support for victims of abuse by tying a ribbon onto an iron gate inside Ely Cathedral

In addition to the installation from 14th-18th November Ely Cathedral and the Diocese of Ely will be acknowledging a Season of Safeguarding with a series of events that will focus on, and raise awareness of, a number of safeguarding issues that affect all of our communities.

Speaking at the launch on Monday, The Very Revd Mark Bonney, Dean of Ely said “Safeguarding is the responsibility of each and every one of us, and as a community we all have a duty to recognise the devastating affect that abuse, both current and historical, has on so many. It is critically important that our eyes, ears and hearts are open to what survivors say to us. We hope these ribbons will serve as a symbol of our support for all those who have suffered, both victims and survivors, of serious harm and abuse, and be a sign that we will be doing all we can to make our church a place that is safe for everyone”.

The week will bring together presentations from a wide range of organisations that offer help and support for victims and survivors of harm and abuse. These include the Domestic Abuse & Sexual Violence Service, Independent Domestic Violence Advisory Service (IDVA), Survivors Voices, Hate Crime Awareness, Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Local Safeguarding Partnership Board and the Clewer Initiative.

The Ven Richard Harlow, Archdeacon of Huntingdon and Wisbech, will be speaking on the Theology of Safeguarding, and throughout the week the LOUDfence installation of ribbons at the Cathedral will represent a visible display of support and solidarity with those affected by abuse. Visitors will be able to tie ribbons to the fence to represent the voices of those who wish to speak out in support and defence of those affected by abuse. Those unable to attend in person will also be able to submit a ‘virtual ribbon’, and a member of the Team will ensure it is added to the LOUDfence.

You can book your webinar place by visiting the Diocese of Ely website. https://www.elydiocese.org/about/news-jobs-and-events/news-and-announcements/news/remember-to-book-your-place-onto-a-safeguarding-season-webinar.php

For those wishing to show their support of victims of abuse and tie a ribbon, the public are welcome to visit the LOUDfence installation in the South West Transept which is just inside the Cathedral main entrance.
