Applause for Korfball Highflyers

Ely Vikings Korfball Club is very proud of players Dana Fraser and Josh Ford who were successfully selected for the U19s England Korfball squad this year.

England took part in the IKF World Korfball Tournament in Ghent held over the Easter weekend and performed fantastically well. After winning against France in the first round, England made it through to the Quarter finals where they won against Germany with a Golden goal.

This led to England playing against Belgium in the Semi-finals. After a defeat against Belgium, England competed for the bronze medal against Chinese Taipei. The outcome was that England achieved 4th place out of 12 countries participating, only losing to the medal winning teams. An amazing achievement! The overall champions were The Netherlands – the country where Korfball originated.

Dana and Josh had a brilliant experience. Dana said, “it was great to compete for the England u19’s team against some of the best countries in the world”. Josh said “playing in this championship is an incredible opportunity I often play against some my England teammates in our regional league, so getting to play with them against some of the top teams in the world was an unforgettable experience.  As a team we worked hard to achieved 4th place.

Dana and Josh have played with Ely Vikings Korfball Club since they were Juniors moving on to the Senior club when they were 14 years old. They are currently regulars on the first team, competing in the Cambridgeshire Korfball Association (CKA) as well as the South East Regional (SERL) leagues. Additionally, they have also competed at County level for the Cambridgeshire Korfball Association squad.

Head coach Chris Brown stated that “both Dana and Josh have both shown great potential since their introduction to korfball as youngsters. They have both worked hard and developed their talents over the years. They have risen from the junior ranks through to our first team and it has been a privilege to see them develop and achieve the success they have had at the club, county, and international level. We all hope they continue to develop and reach their full potential as both have very bright futures in the sport.”

Korfball is the only team sport designed to be played by mixed teams. Each team consists of four male and four female players and working together as a team is fundamental to success. The nature of the sport means that it is safe for suitably skilled 13 -14 year olds to play with and against adults. Our club caters for players from the ages of 7 up to 70. We are based at the Hive where we train on Monday evenings, 6-7pm during term time for juniors and 7-9pm for seniors. for more information find us on our website www.elyvikings.com or Instagram and Facebook.
