This marks the third such effort by Cambridge Commodities in recent months to ensure Ely’s families in need can provide their children with meals throughout this turbulent year. 

“Inspired, once again, by Marcus Rashford’s efforts and spurred on by the Autumn half terms success, we are proud to confirm that we’ll be offering the young people of Ely a free lunch over the Christmas break,” says Cambridge Commodities founder and CEO, James Stevens. “All you need to do is pop into Daybreaks on Fore Hill and wish the hard-working team a very Merry Christmas.”

The meals in question will include a sandwich, fruit, a cereal bar or cake, and a choice of a canned drink, fruit juice or water. Daybreaks will be providing this service between the 21^st-24^th and the 29^th-31^st of December, so make sure to spread the word.

The venture is a new arm of the newly formed Good Vibes Local Community Interest Company which umbrellas everything Spotted in Ely. The new CIC means that we can grow the good community feel social media project which spills into real life.

The radio station has been very lucky secure a Head of Music in the highly experienced Craig Dane, formally of Star Radio and still works from time to time for Heart. We also have local house DJ Steven Funnell joining us plus over 20 volunteers all working in the background towards a full launch in the first quarter of 2021.

You can tune in to tonight’s 2 hour launch party online, through the android app and via Alexa. Mark Cooney, Editor of Spotted in Ely will be doing the first hour and Craig the second.

The station will be formally opened by Sue Austen, the Mayor of Ely.

Some non-essential shops have been given permission to reopen from Monday 15th June and Ely Market reopened this week on Thursdays and Saturdays but only to food and garden stalls.

Some shops to open on Monday include Sew Much To Do, Well Heeled and Cutlacks. Every store must practise social distancing and this will include making customers queue should the store requirements need it. So what does this mean for the narrow pathways on Ely High Street which is controlled by Cambridgeshire County Council?

In a Facebook post, Mr Hobbs said, “Is it time we considered making our High Street free from through traffic. Social distancing is going to be with us long after our shops open. I know I feel safer on Saturday’s and I’m sure our shopkeepers want to encourage us back to Ely. I urge both traders and councillors to consider and evaluate the advantages of closing our High Street to through traffic and use the model we use on Saturdays.”

In response to the post, East Cambridgeshire District Councillor Lis Every stated: “We are looking into it”.

Former Councillor, Elaine Griffin-Singh further commented with a summary of the second review performed by Cambridgeshire County Council. The date of the last review was about 10 years.

“Thing is, it couldn’t be like a Saturday. The CCC Review concluded that there was a number of statutory exclusions from pedestrianisation. It identified that all the deliveries including postal deliveries, and shoppers collecting (from say Hughes) will have to come through, it was said you couldn’t stop disabled traffic getting to the disabled bays which must remain, taxis must have thoroughfare because disabled people need to be dropped in the High Street, a lot of residents live above who need to sometimes service their homes who must be given access, there are a number of financial institutions, banks and building societies and it is a legal requirement that they must have secure close access to move money. The difference between Ely and other places is we have no roadway ‘backs’ to shops so everything must be done from the front. Saturdays were possible as shops were forced to cease deliveries and movements for just one day and it being the weekend.

“Despite there being some stiff opposition from some High Street shopkeepers, which might have changed although those ones are still there, it was concluded the last time that by the time you make all the required allowances, you have only banned minimal through traffic so not achieved the “Saturday feeling” whilst inconveniencing the shopper or resident who has to go the long way round. It also had a detrimental effect on Broad Street as it changed the traffic flow.

“Before the City Council spend a lot of time on this again, they should probably get the file out and read the Review, I cannot see that anything has changed.”

Many of the pavements measure less than 2 metres wide at many of the shops along the thoroughfare and this morning we witnessed many people having to use the road to maintain the Governments mandatory 2-metre social distance rules.

Several people of replied to the post, including Tony who said “An excellent idea – the City must do all it can to bring confidence back to a fearful society” and Verity said, “I’ve been thinking about this over the past few weeks. Social distancing will be very difficult up the high street as all the queues will get mixed up. If it were pedestrianised you could queue across the road instead of the pavement.”

Anna Bailey, Leader of East Cambridgeshire District Council and County Councillor, said: “We will be closely monitoring public feedback on the reopening of the high street and will be making adjustments where necessary to ensure shopper safety.”

Having spoken briefly to one of the owners, he was pleased to report everyone is safe and this was later confirmed by a member of the Fire Service who told Spotted in Ely that it was both the warehouse and the factory involved in the fire.

Smoke has been reported seen from as far away as Manea, Wimblington and Donnington.

There are currently six crews including a crane and water carrier on scene plus other emergency services.

A regular to Tesco, buying for Foodbank, the Market Street restaurant owner arranged to feed 45 of its staff one evening as some finished their shift, while others were about to start.

On returning to collect his utensils, Zahid found a lovely note that read, “Thank you so very much for your delicious Curry. It was much appreciated. Regards Tesco Ely Night Team”, placed in an envelope marked “To the mystery curry man”

Staff at Ely supermarkets have been the targets of several unnecessary pockets of abuse including one who tells me she had sandwiches thrown at her but the panic buying seems to be over and things almost returning to normal.

Former school teacher, historian, author, Councillor, Mayor and family man, Mike is now 80 years old and during his birthday party, we surprised him with the Community Star Award.

Nominating and speaking in the video, Matthew Routledge said of Mike, “Michael Rouse has been our mayor for two years, in that two years he has been a visible, approachable, supportive, kind, funny and fantastic individual – that doesn’t cover his constant work, support and love for Ely that has been a constant theme throughout his entire life. Without Mike, the heartbeat of Ely wouldn’t be as loud and as proud as it is.”

It is well-known that as Mayor, Mike Rouse has been one of the most visible, attending hundreds of events during his 2 years. Each mayor is usually chosen to represent for one year but due to radical changes during the last election, Mike stepped in for a second year running.

For the first time in 80 years, on receiving the award we made Mike speechless but during a humourous exchange, his humble demeanour shone through.

Today, Cambridge Meridian Academies Trust was pleased to be able to confirm that the Trustees and Academy Council have appointed Mr Simon Warburton to work alongside Mr Spencer as the new College Principal from September.

Mr Warburton is an experienced senior leader, having held Deputy Head roles at Hitchin Boys’ School and Impington Village College.  The father-of-two is a scientist married to a musician and is, therefore, equally devoted to the sciences and performing arts!  Simon worked for 15 years in schools across Hertfordshire, before moving to Impington Village College 5 years ago.  Whilst at Impington, he has led a number of strategies to improve the mental health and wellbeing for staff and students and has played a key role in the impressive reputation that Impington Village College now possesses. 

Mr Warburton says “I am thrilled to have been appointed as College Principal of Ely College for September.  The huge progress made by Mr Spencer, his senior team, all the staff, students, parents and trustees means that I will be leading a community who are rightly incredibly proud of their school.  The five CMAT core values are fundamental to my belief in what constitutes the goal of education: maximising the full benefit of 7 years at Ely College to empower learners to discover their lifelong joy, be confident, respectful and successful members of their communities and enthuse in others the wonder of learning and pride in overcoming challenges.”

Mr Spencer said: “I am delighted that we have appointed Mr Warburton as Principal from September. He brings with him a wealth of experience, fresh ideas and energy. This is a very exciting time to be a part of Ely College and I am very much looking forward to delivering new developments alongside him over the next few years.
