Boots in Ely has joined a nationwide campaign to support The Hygiene Bank, by collecting donations of hygiene products from customers.
Ely’s Boots store in Market Square has placed a collection bin by the door for people to donate toiletries, hygiene, beauty and personal care items for local people in crisis.
The Hygiene Bank’s local volunteer co-ordinator will distribute the products to organisations in and around Ely, such as schools and foodbanks, to help local families in need.
The launch of this new initiative between The Hygiene Bank and Boots comes in the run up to the first ever National Hygiene Week, from 14th to 20th September. Boots has already donated over 200,000 units of their own products nationally, to top up the items their customers have kindly donated in store.
The Hygiene Bank is seeking donations of everything from toothbrushes and toothpaste, to sanitary products and shower gels, shaving foam and shampoos, to baby bath and nappies. Any new, unused items can be dropped off in the Boots collection bin. The Hygiene Bank is encouraging Boots customers to take advantage of the many ‘buy-one-get-one-free’ offers in store and drop the extra item in the Hygiene Bank collection bin.
The Hygiene Bank local project co-ordinator Alison O’Connor, explains: “Sadly, those who find themselves in times of crisis often have to make a choice between food and hygiene because they simply can’t afford to do both. Being clean is not a luxury, it is about dignity. No-one should face hygiene poverty in modern Britain, but it is closer to home than you think. The Hygiene Bank is a way for local people to help local people when they really need it and having a collection within Boots will not only provide us with essential donations but will also help spread the message.”
The Hygiene Bank has been helping to banish hygiene poverty and period poverty since the beginning of 2018 and has since distributed over 300 tonnes of hygiene and personal care products around the country.
