Over 900 people attended the Christmas Tree Lights Switch on Sunday 8th December.
This special family friendly service represents the official switch on and blessing of the magnificent Christmas tree which stands 32 feet high under the Octagon in Ely Cathedral.
The Dean of Ely, The Very Revd Mark Bonney, invited the children to throw glitter over the tree as it is blessed just before the countdown to the many hundreds of lights being turned on.
Local resident Sarah Prior summed up the event “Always a fantastic experience at the Christmas tree switch on – Christmas wouldn’t be the same without it. It’s one of our family traditions now, the kids absolutely love it. The singing of the hymns, the choir and the sprinkles of Christmas magic on the tree. Not forgetting the amazing building, a must visit in the city”.
The tree is sponsored by The Friends of Ely Cathedral and takes several days to decorate under the artistic direction of Katie Haydn-Slater and a team of volunteers.
