Over two weekends in January and February the counties’ top swimmers gathered in Cambridge to compete at the 2023 Cambridgeshire County Championships.
Twenty one swimmers achieved the qualifying times and competed in the individual events, where City of Ely ASC finished 3rd out of all the clubs in Cambridgeshire.
The swimmers achieved excellent results with exceptional performances from Jorja Atkinson who finished as the overall top 12 year old girl with an outstanding 15 gold medals. In addition, Oliver Fuller was second overall in the 13 year old boys age group and Daniel Kendall was 3rd overall in the 17 and over category. Oliver Fuller faced tough competition from his friend and teammate Josh Black in the 13 yr old age group; their friendly rivalry is an inspiration to the whole club.
A number of swimmers achieved medals which is a fantastic achievement at a county event – a summary of the medals won are listed :- Jorja Atkinson 15 Gold; Oliver Fuller 2 Gold, 3 Silver, 6 Bronze, Joshua Black 1 Gold, 4 Silver, 2 Bronze; Megan Clarke 1 Gold, 2 Bronze; Daniel Kendal 3 Silver, 5 bronze; Oliver Davey 2 Silver, 2 Bronze; Jacob Schultz 1 silver, 2 bronze; Peony Jackson 1 silver, 1 bronze; Arthur Greenhill 1 bronze.
The following swimmers also qualified for finals and so narrowly missed out on gaining a medal – Gabriel Kim, Annabelle Smith, Finn Taylor, William Clarke, Alexander Pashley, Cillian O’Brien, Evie Greenhill, Jake Challenger, Tia Hill.
In addition, Robert Banwell, Harriet Petherick and Sarah Hardiment also achieved County qualifying times enabling them to compete in the Championships.
Overall City of Ely ASC swimmers attained numerous personal best times and additional East Region championship qualifying times, the regional competitions take place in April/May.
