City of Ely Cricket Club Make History in First Match Against Kings Ely

History was made on Saturday morning as City of Ely CC Women’s Cricket team played their first ever match against Kings Ely.

It was another milestone in the journey of the club’s women’s section which started out two years ago as a small group of ladies who attended some introductory softball sessions.

The club now boasts over 30 female members who have well and truly caught the cricketing bug thanks to their lead coach Simon Cross and newly appointed captain Becky Case-Upton, who was the driving force behind the club introducing a dedicated offering for ladies.  The team have also received some excellent support from sponsors Pocock & Shaw and Deanta.

Kings Ely won the toss and elected to bat and showcased some fine strokeplay as they posted a formidable 144-1 from their 20 overs. Alice Cross was the star bowler as she picked up the team’s first ever wicket and consistently caused issues for the Kings’ batters.

Lucy McGowan and Charlie Stringer led the Ely reply and both played some fine shots in a productive opening partnership with both reaching double figures. Kings Ely showcased some tight bowling and fine fielding over the 20 overs meaning they ran out comfortable winners in the end however Ely can be delighted with their score of 93-4 at their first ever attempt.

The team are already looking forward to their next match and the club continue to have big plans for both ladies and junior girls – this year over 20 juniors have taken part in a girls only Dynamos programme and plans are afoot for a junior girls team.

Ladies cricket training is on a Wednesday at 6.30pm at The Paradise Centre, Ely. If you are interested in training or have any other questions, please contact Becky Case-Upton via beckycu148@gmail.com or 07785 29172
