A new car park due to be built near Ely Station will make travelling to the new Cambridge North railway station much easier for Ely commuters, councillors say.
As reported in Spotted in Ely earlier this month, East Cambridgeshire District Council’s planning committee unanimously gave the green light for the new 128 space car park.
The car park will be created on a one acre site, located on waste ground near the old Bowling Alley on The Dock.
Cllr Bill Hunt, chair of the asset development committee said today that the car park will make commuting by rail more viable for Ely commuters, especially when the new Cambridge North railway station opens.
The new station, located near Cambridge Science Park, was initially due to open on December 2015 but is now expected to be up and running on May 21 this year.
Cllr Hunt said: “More and more houses are being built in the local area, businesses are expanding and investing in Ely, and use of the railway station is increasing, so these car parking spaces are essential.”
He said the new initiative would positively impact on the lives of commuters, as they would find it easier to find a car park and because the cost of parking would be “significantly cheaper” than at Ely Station car park.
“We are thrilled that this development has been given unanimous approval and we are looking forward to getting started and delivering this much needed facility for local people as soon as we can.”
The proposal involves a raised pedestrian walkway with traffic calming ramps on either side, linking to the existing pathway and providing an additional route for pedestrians to walk from Angel Drove car park to the station.
The car park is expected to be open in the autumn.
