Ely City WI is delighted to be named a finalist in the East Anglia Clean & Green Awards.
These inaugural awards celebrate individuals and groups committed to sustainability and greener lifestyles across business, agriculture and community initiatives. Ely City WI has been shortlisted in the Community Champion category for their dedication to sustainability and conservation through various impactful campaigns.
The judges were particularly impressed by Ely City WI’s positive ‘can-do’ attitude and their strong leadership in sustainability. Their efforts include:
- litter picking as part of the Great British Spring Clean
- promoting eco-friendly choices such as bringing your own cups to meetings, recycling, item swaps or purchasing second hand clothes/ items, reducing single use plastic
- running a gardening club
- planting of the WI Woods as part of the late Queens green canopy scheme
- encouraging home crafting, including making fidget quilts for care home residents and crocheted decorations for Remembrance Sunday
- raising awareness of climate issues
Every action, no matter how small, makes a difference and contributes to a greener future. It was with this ethos, championed by President Sheila Willson, that made Ely City WI stand out and earn their place in the final.
As an inclusive group of 65 members, Ely City WI truly embodies their motto “We are. We can. We do”. The judges praised them as “steely, focused and dynamic women” who are not only driving change but also inspiring others to take action for a greener, more sustainable future.
The winners of each category will be announced at an awards ceremony on 20th March 2025. Regardless of the outcome Ely City WI are already winners – true champions within their community, making a lasting impact through their dedication to sustainability and positive action.
