Thirteen Ely College students last week took part in a book award ceremony in Cambridge, with the winners picked by young readers across the county.
And one Ely College student, Hannah Meek, received a special award herself, after winning a prize for her design of a trophy for the award.
The students were part of a regional delegation of pupils attending the first ever Bridge Book Award at Peterhouse College last week.
Sarah Crossan scooped first prize with “One”, a thought-provoking young adult novel about conjoined twins who can no longer afford homeschooling and must venture into the world – and face other kids for the first time.
Meanwhile local author and former Ely College parent Julian Sedgwick – who recently visited the school to promote World Book Day – received the runner-up prize with “Ghosts of Shanghai”
The powerful teen thriller follows a gang of Chinese and ex-pat children hiding out inside a ruined temple in 1920s Shanghai, trying to hunt down restless spirits.
This is the first year the student selected book award has been held.
In the autumn term, Cambridgeshire students were asked to nominate their favourite books and the winner was selected from these choices.
Following the ceremony, all students were treated to a goody bag provided by Heffer’s Bookshop.
