Ely Duathlon Tests Runners, Cyclists and Triathletes

Bright, spring sunshine greeted the 84 athletes and two teams who took part in the Ely Tri Club 115 Squadron Duathlon on Sunday 8th May.

The race started and finished on Lancaster Way next to the Apex Coffee House, heading out onto Witchford’s disused WW2 airfield for a 5K run before transitioning to a bike leg which took in the quiet Sunday morning roads of Little Downham and Coveney, then returned to Ely for the second 5K run.

The field featured an eclectic mix of participants – everybody from seasoned triathletes through to complete multi-sports beginners – with everyone putting in strong performances.

“What a fantastic day – perfect location, generous sponsors, enthusiastic athletes, favourable weather, magnificent marshals and expert planning made for a successful and enjoyable race for all concerned” commented assistant race director Fiona Butler.

Prize money donated by Ely businesses Grovemere Property, Horizon, dB Broadcast, AC Timber, Elyte Fitness, Thorlabs and the Apex Coffee House rewarded the first, second and third male and female finishers £150, £100 and £50 each.

The overall winner was C-Squad’s Alistair Steele in a time of 1:16:47 with Walden Tri’s Georgina Dunlop the first female over the line in 1:29:29 (on her birthday too!).

The winning sponsorship team were dB Broadcast, who are now the proud owners of the Lancaster Way Cup, and bragging rights for next year’s event.
