During lockdown, when so many are learning, and educating from home, the team at Ely Museum have been busy providing weekly “Museum From Home” crafts and activities online, inspired by the museums collection! You can find all of these on their Facebook page & blog at www.elymuseum.org.uk/blog.
Lockdown has been a challenge for everyone, but with some households hit harder than others, the need for foodbanks is greater than ever.
With household budgets squeezed, the museum recognised that arts & crafts materials were probably not top of the shopping list for many, and that’s where they could help!
Thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the museum is able to provide an initial 1600 activity packs for the foodbank to hand out with their usual food parcels.
These themed activity packs cover several millennia from the dinosaurs to World War II, as well as ‘starter packs’ including lots of creative necessities, so there is something for all ages to enjoy this summer!

Ely Museum closed its doors in September 2019 to begin an exciting redevelopment of the Old Gaol. The museum was awarded a grant of £1.66m from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, the project will rejuvenate Ely Museum and make it a fantastic destination for local people and visitors to the area.
Alongside the National Lottery Heritage Fund grant, the museum has received support from a number of local and national trusts and foundations, East Cambridgeshire District Council, City of Ely Council, and has been delighted by the donations and enthusiasm of local people.
Now Ely Museum’s ambitious £2.2 million project is in full swing and despite a few months of Covid-19 related delays, the building work is continuing and we look forward to reopening the museum in early 2021.
