Ely Museum to Reopen

Following a £2.2m redevelopment, Ely Museum is set to open its doors again.

Ely Museum is delighted to announce that we reopen to the public on Friday 21st May!

Our much awaited reopening means we can now begin to share our amazing new museum with visitors and normality can begin to return.   You can now book your tickets to visit the museum from our website too!

From exciting galleries and interactive exhibitions to facilities like a lift, toilets and a new education space, Ely Museum offers a fun, engaging trip for the whole family. With some objects on display for the first time and beautiful new displays for our favourites too, objects such as the East Cambridgeshire Gold Torc can really shine.

In September 2019, Ely Museum closed its doors for what we anticipated would be a 13 month closure. As we know, 2020 did not pan out as expected, and our redevelopment was delayed by lockdowns, restrictions and the most unforeseen circumstances we could have imagined.

Lockdown was spent transforming the Old Gaol into a museum fit for a 21st century audience, whilst also restoring the beautiful historic features of the gaol.

The museum tells the story of Ely and the surrounding Fens and the people who lived here, the new galleries allow us to tell those stories for all ages too.  Whether you want to learn about the Romans whilst handling real Roman pottery or dressing up in a toga, whether you prefer to learn about the Fens by seeing the objects and enjoying videos or if you prefer to research further in our research hub, there is something for all at Ely Museum.

Elie Hughes, Curator at Ely Museum says;

“We are so excited to finally be able to welcome visitors back into the museum. We hope that everyone will really enjoy visiting the museum and finding out about the fascinating local landscape and the stories of the people who have lived here.”

Anne Jenkins, Director England Midlands and East, National Lottery Heritage Fund says;

“It is wonderful that, thanks to National Lottery players, we have been able to support Ely Museum during the pandemic to ensure that these amazing services are preserved for years to come, meaning that local people and visitors can learn more about Ely’s rich heritage. We wish them a very successful reopening”.

Please note: Our reopening plans are dependent on the lockdown easing.  Should the lockdown roadmap change, our plans may be delayed.

Whilst covid-19 restrictions remain in place, the museum will operate under a limited capacity and with restrictions and safety precautions in place.
