As Ely Squadron continues to stand back up following the enforced pause in cadet activities during lockdown, 1094 Squadron cadets have been attending Summer camps, The National Aerospace Camp, Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions, road marching and day visits.
Here’s a report from Corporal James Munday who has just returned from his Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme Residential Project:
“On the 23rd – 27th August along with ten others, I attended a residential course for my Gold DofE in Swanage with an adventure training company Cumulus Outdoors. For those who are new to The DofE scheme, a residential is only necessary for your Gold Award.
After arriving, we went to the beach to make some sea art from the coasts materials. The next day we had a full day of water sports such as kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding and raft building which we later tested our designs by completing (successfully) several challenges. To finish the day we had a talk on the Jurassic coast in the evening about how the landscape in the area changed to expose all 3 levels of the Mesozoic era.
The day after was rock climbing and coasteering which was my favorite two exercises. With coasteering, we jumped off different parts of the cliff, swam through 2 caves and passed through a slim crack between some rocks. On the forth day it was power boating in the morning in Swanage Bay where we traveled past Old Harry and other famous land features followed by tag archery in the afternoon.
On the final day we got to go to a waterpark based on a lake before leaving. During the 5 days, we had to cook meals for all 27 of us and the leader which prepares us for the expedition. Overall it was a great experience, met great new people and enjoyed all the amazing activities.”
