Ely Tigers fall to Saffron Walden despite second half response

Alfie Allen – try scorer

Ely Tigers travelled to Saffron Walden for their latest league fixture with a growing casualty list, which led to a senior debut for Ben Bridge.

The Tigers started brightly, putting the home side under early pressure, but were unable to turn territory into points. Saffron Walden capitalised on a loose ball to break the deadlock after 15 minutes.

From there, momentum shifted firmly in favour of the home side, who added a series of tries to build a commanding 33–0 lead at half time.

Ely responded early in the second half with a penalty try to get on the scoreboard. However, Saffron Walden continued to press, adding three more tries to push beyond the 50 point mark.

The Tigers kept battling and were rewarded with a try from Tom Green. Alfie Allen soon added another, with Tom Gunbie converting, as Ely continued to show character despite the scoreline.

The home side added two further tries late on to seal a 71–19 victory.
