Ely's post office could move for the third time in as many years

Ely’s current Post Office may have to relocate once a new postmaster has been selected, Spotted in Ely can reveal.
A Post Office spokeswoman said today that the company had received two applications from applicants interested in running the Ely branch, which is currently being operated by a temporary postmaster, with reduced opening hours and services.
“We are currently considering both applications to decide which one to progress.
“Any re-location would be subject to six week public consultation.”
The post office, currently situated at Central Hall, Market Street, has been in three different locations in as many years.

It first opened its doors at Central Hall in December 2014, promising extended hours and additional services, after being situated in a portable building in Paradise car park for over a year. Before that it was situated on Ely’s High Street.
Back in July Spotted in Ely broke the story that the Post Office was advertising for a retailer to take over the running of its Ely branch, after the previous postmaster lost his contract in May, due to “a private contractual matter”.
Applicants were invited to register their interest on the Post Office corporate website by July 13.
According to the advertisement, the successful applicant would be in charge of a “dedicated post office area, a full range of services. The exact layout and design will be agreed with you to suit your business.”
The post office would remain “at or near” Central Hall – meaning that its location could change yet again.
The estimated fees for a postmaster operating in the current location range between £99,300 to £110,800 per year.
Until a new retailer could be found to take it over, the Ely branch’s opening hours have been reduced.
It is now open from Monday to Saturday, from 9am to 5.30pm.
