Evening Talks at Ely Museum: The Liber Eliensis – A 12th Century History of the Isle of Ely
Join us for an evening talk as part of our spring series at Ely Museum.
“The Liber Eliensis: a 12th century history of the Isle of Ely” is a talk by Dr Elizabeth Stazicker, Hon Archivist to Ely Cathedral
In the 1350th year of the foundation of the monastery which became Ely Cathedral, this talk will discuss the major source for the life of our local saint, Etheldreda, and for her monasteryโs growth and its transformation into our Cathedral. It will include discussion of the problems of reading a source from the 12th century which itself starts out with a description of events of 500 years earlier, and pay tribute to the work of those who have studied the text, now of course available in English in Janet Fairweatherโs magnificent translation.
Elizabeth Stazicker is Hon Archivist to Ely Cathedral, Archivist to the Kingโs School Ely, and chairman of Cambridgeshire Records Societyโs executive committee, as well as being churchwarden of her local parish church and lay chair of the Ely Deanery Synod. Her career (before retirement!) was in local archives, making records available to as wide a community as possible, culminating in 11 years as Cambridgeshireโs county archivist. Her continuing interests are in the religious life of the Isle of Ely and in fen drainage. She has recently worked with a small group of Cathedral guides, looking at the sources for our knowledge of St Etheldreda, and enjoys the privilege of Latin translation lessons with Janet Fairweather.
