A two day Saxon Fair takes place at Ely Cathedral this weekend with a host of entertainment from the Saxon period including exhibitors, food stalls, live theatre performances and craft making.
With an emphasis on children and families, visitors can take part in story telling sessions, which were a staple of Saxon life. There is also an opportunity to meet with the traders and find out more about their skills including the ‘herb wife’ who will explain how she treats the sick.
Several performances are planned throughout the weekend including theatre productions and warriors showcasing their weapons dance and explaining how they go to war.
The event is being organised in conjunction with Ealdfaeder, who specialise in Anglo Saxon re-enactment and living history. Philippa Stevens, Director of Learning at Ely Cathedral says, “This is going to be a really exciting event with lots of entertainment and the opportunity to experience history and learn about Saxon life and Ely that St Etheldreda would have inhabited in the seventh century.”
Several exhibitors and traders will be on site showing, selling their wares and demonstrating their craft. There will also be refreshments including a hog roast and mead bar.
The Saxon Fair is free entry and open to all. It takes place on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th July between 10am and 5pm on Cross Green adjacent to the Cathedral.
