2018 got off to a flying start for City of Ely Swimming Club on Sunday as 36 members of the club competed in the first open meet of 2018 at the London Aquatics Centre.
For many youngsters, swimming in the 2012 Olympic pool was their first experience swimming in a 50m pool. The Club’s swimmers rose to the occasion at this competitive event finishing 9th of 18 clubs attending with 32 medals overall – 3 Gold, 11 Silver and 18 Bronze.
Individual highlights for the Club included Daniel Kendall 1st boy overall and 1st 11 year old boy (3 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals), Georgia Holgate 14th girl overall and 3rd 10 year old girl (2 silver and 3 bronze), Maximilian Veiga 7th boy overall and 3rd 10 year old boy (1 silver and 5 bronze) and William Haylett 20th boy overall and 3rd 15 year old (2 silver).
Other medallists were Lexi Harrison (3 silver and 2 bronze), Jasmine Thompson (1 silver and 1 bronze) and with a bronze medal each Mia Tandon, Daniel Millard, George Sporle and Gina Brewis. Personal best times toppled for the whole team throughout the day leaving all optimistically looking forward to the start of the Cambridgeshire County Championships next weekend.
