This weekend 24 and 25th July, City of Ely Swimming ASC enjoyed its first competitive action since March 2020 as competitions had been suspended.
Three of our 10/11 year old swimmers Jorja Atkinson, Joshua Black and Annabelle Smith competed at the East Region Future Champions, an event for the top 10/11 year olds in the East region, in Basildon. All three swimmers swam brilliantly and coped with the situation of having no spectators present, they were supported by our team manager and a coach during the competition.
Jorja swam in 8 events, with 6 personal best times (PBs) and a fantastic second place in the 100 Fly. Joshua and Annabelle also had an excellent competition, with Josh competing in 4 events with 3 personal bests and Annabelle in 6 events also with 3 personal bests. All three enjoyed their debut at regional level, congratulations!
Swimming as a sport has been adversely affected by the pandemic with lockdowns and even on reopening limited swimming time available for clubs at leisure centres with swimmers only training 50 % or less of pre- pandemic times.
There have not been any competitions below elite level for more than a year. These young swimmers have risen to these challenges and achieved new personal best times to build on for the future.
