Giant Fenland Black Oak Table arrives at Ely Cathedral

The Fenland Black Oak Project has been working on this spectacular table for the last ten years.

The giant Black Oak trunk was unearthed in 2012, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee year, from Wissington Fens, South West Norfolk.

10 years later, the finished table was delivered by articulated lorry, (due to its size), to the West door at Ely Cathedral. It’s arrived in advance of an official unveiling in the Cathedral next week (on 17th May).

The table competed in 2022, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee year is being dedicated to The Queen in commemoration of her long reign on the throne.

The arrival of the table was a spectacle in its self. The bronze understructure will have to be unloaded from the lorry by a tele handler and each Black Oak board that makes up the 13 metre long top needs 6 people to carry it.
