Members of Isle of Ely Rowing Club brought home a fantastic 14 Gold medals from the British Rowing Indoor Championships in last Saturday. Ely’s Captain, Duncan McCulloch, congratulated all who took part and said the performances from club rowers “did us all proud”.
The Indoor Championships take place each year at the 2012 Olympic velodrome in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Unusually, they’re open to all ages and abilities, making for a packed schedule of events over the day, with Junior rowers, local club rowers like those from Ely, members of Team GB, para (adaptive) rowers, and Masters 80-84 year old rowers all getting the chance to prove themselves in the inspiring Olympic Park setting.
Isle of Ely rowers won medals in the following events:
- 2 Silver Medals William Buchanan J16 Boys 6mins, Jamie Gare 6th form Boys 500m.
- 14 Gold Medals: Boys, Girls and Mixed Junior relays, Poppy Shipley J16 Girls 6mins and Nicki Glen 55-59 Women’s 2000m.
- 2 Bronze Medals: Harriet Drake-Lee and Martha Bullen J16 Girls 6mins.
Nicki Glen, gold medallist in her women’s 2000m event, was especially happy to clock a finish time under 8 minutes, considered a benchmark time in women’s rowing. The Championships made a great goal to train for, and after sticking to her tough autumn training schedule, Nicki smashed her target time by several seconds. Nicki explained “the hardest thing is keeping healthy, so many people with winter colds coughing and gagging on trains. Should have been sponsored by Berrocca!”
Isle of Ely Rowing Club is a friendly local club for both experienced and beginner rowers. Anyone interested is welcome to find out more at www.elyrowingclub.org.uk.
