Year 11’s from Soham Village College took part in a debating competition championed by local MP, Lucy Frazer.
The topic for the debate was “Should Grammar School’s be Reinstated?”.
8 members of the college had to debate in pairs and take sides of the proposition and opposition and each in turn give their views on whether or not Grammar Schools should be allowed back into UK society.
Each had researched the topic in some depth, highlighting issues and historical facts regarding the old style schooling in the UK which is now near extinct.
Mrs Frazer and Mr Jon Hampson, Head of School acted as judges as to whom best performed under the pressure of debating their subject matter. The opposite party could question and raise facts just as a politician would in Parliament.
After all 8 speakers had finished, Mrs Frazer and Mr Hampson deliberated and gave their verdict. Praising each individual and offering advice, they decided that Katie and Zev performed best and they will be invited to attend Westminster as guest of Lucy Frazer in December. They will now debate against other schools for an overall prize.
