Julia’s Tearooms in Ely have teamed up with Action for Happiness – an international movement for positive social change – to become the first Happy Cafe in Cambridgeshire.
The team at Julia’s has cemented its commitment to improving the well-being of our community by joining the Happy Cafe network. The first Happy Cafe was set up in Brighton in October 2014, with the aim of providing a welcoming meeting place for local people to learn about scientifically proven methods to improve happiness and personal well-being. Action for Happiness has researched and produced the ’10 Keys for Happier Living’ and postcards, posters, leaflets and supporting literature will be available at Julia’s for people to read and to learn how to take action themselves.
The idea to set up a Happy Cafe in Ely comes from local woman Kathryn Pearcey who is a passionate supporter of Action for Happiness based on her own positive experience of using their resources. She believes there is huge potential for local people to benefit in a similar way and, since an initial article in March on Spotted in Ely, an enthusiastic team of volunteers has been working to facilitate the opening of Happy Cafe Ely @ Julia’s Tearooms.
To celebrate the opening of Cambridgeshire’s first Happy Cafe, there will be a launch week starting on Monday July 10th with an exciting visit to the Cathedral Conference Centre by author and journalist Rachel Kelly. Rachel is an internationally known mental health campaigner, public speaker and writer and her second book on well-being ‘Walking on Sunshine: 52 Small Steps to Happiness’ is an international best-seller and has been published in the USA, Canada, Poland, Turkey, Germany and Croatia. Rachel will be giving her ‘Walking on Sunshine’ presentation on Monday 10th July at 2pm at the Cathedral Centre and Toppings Booksellers will be providing a bookstall selling her books at the venue. Rachel will be available to answer questions after her talk and to do book signings. Entrance to the event will be by donation and all proceeds will be used to replenish and supplement the Action for Happiness resources available for everyone at Happy Cafe Ely.
On Wednesday July 12th there will be the first fortnightly coffee morning at Julia’s where local volunteers from Action for Happiness will be available to chat about the ’10 Keys for Happier Living’ and the resources available, if you wish. Initially volunteers will be there from 10.30am until noon on the first and third Wednesdays of the month with more meetings planned if there is the need, but everyone is welcome at any time to visit the Happy Cafe and to look at the materials there.
To conclude the week’s events, on Saturday July 15th there will be an afternoon tea/picnic at Julia’s Tearooms, to be held outside the venue overlooking the Cathedral from 3 – 5pm. Julia’s will have a range of cakes, ice-creams and hot drinks available to purchase or you can supply your own picnic and come along to find out more. Action for Happiness volunteers will be there, printed resources will be available and there will be some fun activities to take part in.
Launching Happy Cafe Ely @ Julia’s Tearooms is the start of an exciting and positive community enterprise which aims to make a real difference to the happiness of everyone.
