He waited 40 years to be Mayor again and Mike Rouse is set to be Mayor for the second-year running

Elections this year threw a spanner in the works and so a new Mayor-elect needed to be chosen. But with so little time and many new councillors not experienced enough, Mike Rouse was nominated, seconded and elected to take the top city role for a second-year running.

Before the selection process however, the standing down as Mayor needed to be formally complete and Cllr Rouse wanted to do things slightly differently by presenting cheques to many groups and individuals who deserve the extra attention within our community.

ST JOHNS AMBULANCE – they have supported the Civic Service on many occasions.

THERAPY DOGS – A cheque was presented to Elena for here work in both dog and human welfare.

K9 CAFE – for an upcoming project writing about the importance of dogs.

EMILY PIETERS – AIR CADET – to help launch her fund towards achieving her Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award Scheme

ZACK WYMER – to help towards the cost of a 2 week National Youth Theatre residential course this summer

Tribute was also given to the passing of John Yates, a long term councillor and good friend to Mayor Rouse for which a long ovation was given to his incredible work for Ely. John was passionate about youth services and I had the honour of working alongside him at the Youth Exhibition some years ago.

Mikes consort for last year, his daughter Cassie stood down and when Mike was re-elected, his other daughter Lauren will act as this years consort.
