When best buddies Claire Farrow and Hannah Smith became junior hairdressers over a decade ago, they dreamt of one day running their own salon. Today that dream becomes a reality.
The two mums, who met while studying at Ely College, are celebrating the opening of Farrow & Smith Hair Design.
The funky salon opened today – after a whirlwind three days of redesign, during which the twosome roped in family members and friends to help revamp and redesign the premises on Fore Hill.
Claire told Spotted in Ely: “We dreamt about running a salon but never thought we would. Our dream has come true.”
Hannah started off 13 years ago as a junior hairdresser at the same premises, when David Green Hairdressing was based there.
A year later, Claire started after a recommendation from Hannah.
Working together only extended the friendship, with Hannah being asked to be a bridesmaid at Claire’s wedding seven years ago.
When Claire had her son Reuben and Hannah had daughter Ella two years ago, they didn’t want to give their careers the chop – so they carried on seeing clients at home.
Recently they were approached by Eve Youngman, who took over the salon after David Green relocated to The Atrium, asking if they wanted to take over the lease, as she is now based in Dubai.
The two pals jumped at the chance – and being so close has its fringe benefits, as the two will share the day to day running of the salon between them.
Claire said: “We couldn’t do it without each other. It’s allowed us to pursue our dreams while also making time for our families.”
Farrow & Smith Hair Design will provide usual hairdressing services, as well as hair extensions, and express blow dries on Friday afternoons for people who want to “get that Friday feeling” before going out.
There are plans in the pipeline to provide special parent and toddler sessions.
“Because we have young kids we know how difficult it is for people to come to the salon. We want a safe environment for people to come and be pampered. We want to create a fun, family friendly, down to earth and approachable vibe place where everyone feels welcome.”
Farrow & Smith currently have four hair stylists and a junior stylist and are looking for more to join their team.
