Greater Anglia services to operate between Ipswich and Peterborough, benefitting the Soham community
After 56 years, Soham Station will once again be open to passengers. From Monday 13th December, Soham residents will benefit from Greater Anglia services operating between Ipswich and Peterborough.
Under the former Mayor, James Palmer, the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA) provided an £18.6m funding package for Network Rail to deliver a new railway station, delivered at pace by Network Rail and construction contractor, J Murphy and Sons Ltd. The enabling works began in Autumn 2020 and the main construction phase commenced in spring 2021.
Speaking about the opening, Lucy Frazer MP said: “I am delighted Soham Station has reopened. This project is a fantastic example of the quick delivery of public transport infrastructure that will benefit this local community. I believe it can act as a springboard for enhancing rail services in our area by helping us make the case for reinstating the loop near Newmarket which could provide a direct rail service between Ely, Soham, Newmarket and Cambridge. I have campaigned for this station since before I was elected and am delighted that it has now come to fruition.
I want to thank all those involved in delivering the project at pace, including the Combined Authority, Network Rail and J Murphy and Sons Ltd, as well as the former Mayor, James Palmer who played an integral role in driving this project forward.”
Former Mayor of the CPCA, James Palmer said: “Getting Soham connected back into the rail network was one of my earliest priorities as Mayor. I am delighted it has been delivered and I am confident that this new station will provide residents and local businesses with better travel connections and support greater investment into Soham. I hope that next we will see an hourly service and direct trains to London via Newmarket. I am proud of my role in helping to bring this project to the town.”
