Ely Tigers faced St Ives in a double header fixture on Saturday afternoon, with the Semi Final of the Cambridgeshire Senior Cup and for the Annual Percy Walker Cup.
With St Ives struggling to field a front row, the game saw uncontested scrums, and it was the home side that applied the early pressure, but the visitors stood firm, but the home side finally made the break, with Luke Turner scoring in front of the posts, with Jake Alsop adding the conversion, the lead was quickly doubled with Tiger taking advantage of an advantage, with Matt McCarthy picking up a pass from Paul Dewey, to kick the ball forward, while racing on to pick up his own pass to rush forward to score under the posts, again the conversion in front of the post was added from a penalty to Tiger’s Mitchel Kennet scores Ely’s third try of the afternoon going over out wide, this time the conversion was missed, Alsop breaks from inside the Ely half, freeing McCarthy to score, Alsop misses the conversion as the ball comes off the upright
With half time approaching St Ives finally made inroads in the Tigers half, eventually crossing over the try line to score, with the conversion added, there was still time for Tigers to score once more, with Alsop scoring from a quickly taken a penalty, scoring under the posts, Alsop adds the extra points from his try as the half time whistle went.
From the restart, Ely score again, with another try under the post as Jimmy Storey powering over under pressure to score, another conversion from Alsop, Ely down to 14 as Adam Tallack gets shown a yellow card, during the spell of being a man down Turner adds his second try of the afternoon, with another conversion added, Turner was soon to his third and fourth try’s of the afternoon as the score board clicked towards the 60 point tally, on the stroke of full time McCarthy added his second of the afternoon, as the full time score finished 66-7 as Tigers booked their place in the final where they will play Saffron Walden on the 15th April.
