Ely Tigers faced Thurston at the Cambridge Commodities Park for their penultimate home game of the season.
Tigers showed their early intent applying some early pressure in the scrum, and that early pressure sore Tigers go over for an early try from a scrum, the conversion was missed, from a Thurston scrum, the kicked clear, Ely managed to pick the ball up and drive forward, Jimmy Storey breaking, an inside pass to Aaron Borland to score, Jake Alsop added the conversion to increase the scoreline.
Matt McCarthy adds another try, as Thurston were once again unable to clear their lines, Ely back on the front foot, Alsop adds the conversion, and with half time approaching Borland adds his second try of the afternoon after a pass from Paul Dewey, from the restart Ely carried on where they left off at the end of the first half as Mitchel Kennett diving over the line to score the 5th try of the afternoon, with the conversion added,
Borland added his third try of the afternoon, after sprinting along the wing to score, Alsop was unable to add the conversion, the try marked the end of the game for Borland as he replaced, Ely went down to 14 as Matt French was shown a yellow card, during this period the visitors scored, as the home defence was finally breached, with a nudge kick and chase to score unchallenged under the posts, the conversion was added to make the score 38-7.
From the restart second half replacement Dan Piper picks up the Ely kick, the ball was released to McCarthy who goes over the line under the posts, alsop conversion added, Kennett adds his second try soon after with another try under the posts as Ely start to turn the screw, Alsop adds the points for the conversion as Tigers pass the 50 point mark, with full time approaching McCarthy adds his third try of the afternoon in the corner, Also was unable to add the extra points as the final score finished 57-7
Ely travel to West Norfolk on Saturday as the season draws to the business end Tigers try to cement a top four finish.
