People in Cambridge, Ely and surrounding villages are now able to attend GP and nurse appointments in the evening and at weekends thanks to a free, new NHS service.
The service, which was officially launched by Cambridge City Council Mayor, Cllr Nigel Gawthrope last night (21 November), is run by Cambs GP Network (CGPN) – a group of GP practices who are working together to deliver services to local people.
Extended GP Opening Hours offers appointments to all registered patients for routine, non-urgent issues and operates from four central hubs across the area.
Patients book appointments through their GP receptionist who will give them a time, date and venue for their appointment. All appointments are booked in advance and it is not a walk-in service.
Dr Anthony Males, Executive Director of CGPN said: “The service is available for patients to see local NHS doctors and nurses, out-of-hours and at weekends. We all lead busy lives and it is important that people have the choice to book appointments when their regular GP practice is closed. This service is already popular with local working adults and parents with young children and we expect greater uptake from students and commuters over the coming months.”
Mayor, Cllr Gawthrope agrees: “This is an excellent public service for our residents who will benefit from the flexibility it offers. As winter approaches and the pressure on the NHS and A&E increases, this will offer a good alternative for people who need to see a health care professional at a time that suits them. I am incredibly pleased to be launching this service in Cambridge and look forward to using it myself should the need arise.”
Receptionists in practices will also at be able to answer any questions from patients about the service and how to cancel or change bookings.
