A Living History event Saturday 26th February, with Roman soldiers, merchants, shield painters and engineers to chat about what life was like in Britain in the Roman period.
Ely Museum are delighted to welcome the versatile and talented team from Britannia, who have portrayed life in Roman times in the British Isles in museums and on film and television. On 26th February, Ely Museum will be full of Romans, including textile workers, soldiers and engineers, and visitors will be able to see how they lived, worked and amused themselves!
Alongside the museum’s displays of Roman artefacts, visitors will be able to see and handle replica items like those found in this area.
Britannia are an award-winning re-enactment group who have appeared in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator, Neil Marshall’s Centurion, Blackadder and most recently the Sky TV series Britannia as well as all seven series of CBBC’s Horrible Histories.
Sara Adderson, Assistant Curator, says:
“It’s going to be a really fun-filled day for everyone, with loads to see and do. We’re thrilled to have the team from Britannia come to Ely Museum and looking forward to welcoming visitors to talk about all things Roman.”
Ely Museum currently features Margins of Empire: Romans in the Fens, a temporary exhibition which stars two incredible local Roman artefacts kindly loaned by The British Museum. It is a fantastic opportunity to see these items back near where they were found. The exhibition, which runs until June 28th, explores the often unseen role of people living in the Roman Empire who were not Roman citizens.
The permanent galleries at Ely Museum tell the story of the lives of the people of Ely and the surrounding fens from prehistory to the modern day. Hands-on objects, dressing up, activities and trails make Ely Museum a fun visit for the whole family.
