Polish Community School Welcomed to Ely Museum for Festive Fun!

On Saturday 27th November, with thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Ely Museum were delighted to host the Polish Community School for a morning of festive fun, crafts, music and traditions.

We enjoyed traditional Christmas tales told in English and in Polish, sang traditional Polish and English Christmas and folk songs, enjoyed poems, stories, and some festive crafts too!
We also enjoyed a selection of Polish treats including bortsch, pierogi and pasztecik filled with vegetables grown in the Fens.

Kinga from the Polish Community School said; “We had a wonderful time at Ely Museum as we shared our culture and traditions with them.  We enjoyed sharing both English and Polish stories, poems and songs, as well as making decorations for our trees”

Emily Allen, Community Engagement Officer at Ely Museum said;“We were thrilled to be able to welcome the Polish Community School to the museum to celebrate our shared traditions.  Links with the Polish community in Ely go back for many years, including to November 1940 when local people invested their savings in the ‘Ely Spitfire Fund’ which funded 3 spitfires, one of which was used by the 303 Polish Squadron!

The local children had been practicing hard in the weeks leading up to the event, and wowed us with their performances! We enjoyed some Christmas classics, like Jingle bells, in both Polish and English as well as traditional Polish folk songs too.
