While many clubs were enjoying the sunny half term break, 10is Academy was busy holding several competitions including the prestigious “Road to Wimbledon”.
Road to Wimbledon is the biggest junior tournament in British tennis and gives all 14U players the opportunity to progress through to compete on the world-famous grass courts at Wimbledon.
The first stage of the competition takes place in local Academies and schools who are encouraged to stage a fun, sociable tournament for their members/pupils rated between 10.2 and 7.1.
The 2021 10is Academy winners were Tia Glenister who beat Stephanie Chirgadze in 2 disputed set (6/2 7/6) and Charlie McGuinness who beat Joe Shackleton 4/3 11/9 in a thrilling.
Both Tia and Charlie will progress to the county final at Hills Road Tennis Centre on 10-11 July 2021. It is possible that Stephanie and Joe might join them.
The winners of the County Finals will progressed to play in the National Finals on the grass courts at Wimbledon (12th to 18th August).
10is Academy used that day to run other competitions with James Reid taking the title for the 8U, Joshua Newton and Maria Efremeva won the 9U, while Sophie Hemmings fought hard against Wiliam Brooker to take the 10U title.
Overall the standard of tennis was very high with close fought matches throughout the entire tournament. Our thanks to King’s Ely for allowing to host this prestigious competition.
The national league is resuming this weekend with the 9U welcoming Huntingdon TC a strong team made up of many county players.
