A Stretham miniature zoo has beaten King’s College Chapel, Duxford Air Museum and the University of Cambridge to win the second spot in a Trip Advisor poll, Spotted In Ely can reveal.
The Animal Experience is second on the list of Top Things to Do in Cambridgeshire, beaten only by the Cambridgeshire Wine School in Cambridge.
The Cambridge Road owned family business, which lets people get up close to animals, has gone from strength to strength since opening its small zoo in Stretham, appearing on Blue Peter, Animal Planet and Channel 4.
And now a poll created by travellers around the globe has voted the The Animal Experience the second top attraction in the county – beating numerous, well established tourism hot spots.
Hazel Price, of The Animal Experience, told Spotted in Ely she was thrilled by the rating, especially as it was based on people’s personal experiences.
“It’s what people think of us, so it means a lot. I knew we were number two in Ely and I thought that was pretty good – but to be number two in Cambridgeshire is amazing.”
One of the attraction’s highlights is Meet the Meerkats – an experience described by one recent reviewer as “the best time ever”.
The visitor said: “Highly recommend this AMAZING place. All the animals are loved and cared for. The guides know their stuff and love the animals. We enjoyed this so much I wanted to go back the next day! The meerkats are just as I hoped so cute and clever. Wonderful place. Definitely will visit again and take my children. Thank you.”
Established in 1995, The Animal Experience has appeared at over 2000 private parties as well as hundreds of schools, veterinary colleges and universities.
Its aim is to entertain and educate as well as helping people overcome their fear of reptiles.

The Animal Experience also rescues and rehomes unwanted pets – mostly large reptiles that people can’t care for properly, such as Burmese pythons and iguanas.
Last year The Animal Experience rehomed a pair of chinchillas after reading about them on Spotted in Ely.
