Take care on wet roads, warn police after a spate of Saturday smashes

Take care on wet roads – particularly in rural areas, warn police, following 11 smashes in under eight hours last weekend.
With tomorrow (September 16) forecast to be a wash out for some of the afternoon, motorists and cyclists should take extra care during Friday rush hour.
Last Saturday, 11 crashes were reported to police across East Cambridgeshire in less than eight hours.

Sergeant Phil Priestley said: “Many of the incidents were single vehicle only, with cars leaving the highway due to a combination of speed and conditions.

|In poor conditions even 30mph can be too much. We are appealing to drivers to drive to the conditions, and not to treat speed limits as targets.”
The crashes included an accident involving a cyclist and a car near Queen Adelaide at 2pm.
A number of cars were written off that day, without reason to believe that the drivers involved were travelling at excessive speeds, Sgt Priestley said.
“We ask drivers to respect the conditions and be that little bit more carefully than they otherwise might be – particularly when approaching bends and junctions.”
Although a number of drivers suffered back and neck injuries, none were thought to be life threatening largely thanks to the use of seat belts.
Particular areas of concern included Prickwillow Road, Ely, Dulling Road in Woodditton, Hall Street in Soham and Ely Road, Queen Adelaide.
