On Saturday 30th March 2019 The Stained Glass Museum in Ely will celebrate 40 years of opening to the public!
To celebrate this landmark birthday, entry to the museum will be FREE* all day on Saturday 30 March, during our Family Fun Day.
The Stained Glass Museum’s Curator, Dr Jasmine Allen, commented: “This will be a really exciting event – 40 years to the day that the Stained Glass Museum first opened in Ely Cathedral in 1979. We want to celebrate with you! Whether you are revisiting, or discovering the museum for the first time, come and be inspired by our fantastic collection, have fun and learn something new.”
A range of activities suitable for all the family will be taking place throughout the day, including:
- Glass Painting Demos by professional stained glass artist – 10.30am – 12.30am and 2.00pm – 4.00pm (ground floor, south-west transept)
- Gallery Toursꭝ (lasting 15-20 minutes) – 11am, 12pm, 2pm and 3pm (upper level, SGM gallery) Come on a whistle-stop tour with one of our team, who will introduce some of the museum’s key exhibits
- Behind-the-Scene Toursꭝ (lasting 10-15 minutes) – 11.30am, 2.30pm, 3.30pm (upper level, SGM gallery) An opportunity to see behind-the-scenes!
- Crafts and stories (ground floor, south-west transept and upper level, SGM gallery)
Visitors can also explore the museum on their own throughout the day using our trails, audio guides, light box activities, and discovery bags (upper level, SGM gallery).
Location and Access: The Stained Glass Museum is located on an upper level of Ely Cathedral known as the south triforium. Some activities will take place in the Stained Glass Museum (accessed by 40 steps) whilst other activities will take place on the ground floor. We have included the location of activities in the list above.
*Please note free entry applies to The Stained Glass Museum only ꭝNumbers on tours may be limited for health & safety reasons – we will operate on a first come first served basis.
