The owner of a successful Ely delicatessen says the difficult decision to close down her business was cemented after an exhausting summer.
With just over a week to go until Allgoods of Ely shuts its doors for the last time, Tracy Allgood told Spotted in Ely she will miss the people coming into the shop but needs to get her work-life balance back.
“The last six weeks have broken me. I’ve worked every day in the summer holiday. The work life balance hasn’t worked. I don’t mind full-time but not two full-times.”
Tracy’s looking forward to spending more time with her family, particularly sons Matthew, 14, and Daniel, 13.
She’s had an offer on the building but it has since been withdrawn. The building will go back on the market next week.
Tracy said she’ll miss the people who’ve regularly visited the store over the past couple of years but needs to take some time out for her family.
“I’m glad we’ve tried it. It wasn’t for us. At least I don’t have to wonder ‘what if’ in 10 years time. The bit I’m going to miss is the people. We are still local and we’re still going to enjoy seeing everyone.”
The Market Street deli first opened in March 2014, quickly gaining a reputation for its legendary Scotch eggs and other culinary delights.
Its last day is Saturday, September 17. Until it shuts there’s a closing down sale with 20 per cent off everything except cheese, Scotch eggs, brownies, alcohol and soft drinks.
Allgoods is no longer selling gift vouchers but will honour outstanding ones.
On September 1, Allgoods announced that its closure on its Facebook page, much to the surprise and dismay of local residents.
The message ended: “I would like to thank everyone for making our time in the deli so enjoyable and thank you for all your support over the past couple of years. Tracy x”
