The Great British Spring Clean has now ended and up and down the Country nearly half a million bags of rubbish had been gathered. Ely City WI played their part in this too, with the help of equipment provided by Ely Litter Pickers.
The campaign has a clear and simple aim which brings people together to clear up litter that blots are public spaces and communities. Keep Britain Tidy is the driving force behind the operation and this particular organisation has close affiliation with the WI as it was established from a resolution passed at the 1954 Annual Meeting which called for a national anti-litter campaign.
Each year hundreds of Wis support the Great British Spring Clean to clean up the environment, organising litter picks and; inspired to get outdoors, get active and help clear up the rubbish around us, members of Ely City WI gathered on the Paradise Playing Field and got to work.
Sun shining and armed with determination, in only an hour they collected six bags of rubbish over this small area of Ely. One member said “it was great to get out and about for some exercise! Not only did we get to chat and catch up, but we were able to help make Ely a cleaner place”.
